Presidential Debate Thread

Zero chance Elon is more famous than trump.

Unfortunately saw this take from several normies on social media last night.

Honestly you live in a certain type of bubble where politics are a heavily prioritized thing to care about. There are literally millions and millions of people who give absolutely no fucks about politics. And for most of them, who cares where their one vote goes, it’s not going to matter anyway. One vote to waste your time in the line at the local rec hall to vote for two pieces of shit politicians? Nope. You gotta give them something, anything to care about

Some people love having attention on them and will lie to get it

"Hopeful for America if we can reestablish norms like these "

… and the way to reestablish these norms is to vote against the guy destroying them.

But Democrats are so shrill and annoying too!

My wife, who thought Walz should have been more aggressive, still thinks that he “won” because of how extremely unlikable JD Vance is. She is not remotely as steeped in politics as we are and really only learned how terrible he is within the last few days.

I know K-pop is big, but I’m having a very hard time believing that Jungkook is more famous than Donald Trump.

Agree with all of this but we are not talking about some bog standard politician

I wouldn’t be surprised if a massive part of the US population (like 30% or more) couldn’t name Biden or Harris or pick them out from a photo.

Would snap bet a lot of money less than 5% of US citizens would fail at IDing trump in a similar test.

I don’t think they have zero knowledge of him, but they might only know that he was president and not have any opinions on how he was. If they do remember anything, they might misremember.

She’s literally buds with Elon and every tweet of hers should be read as an effort to kiss his ass

Sure he’s more recognizable, but that doesn’t mean people care. For most people their lives haven’t changed much personally regardless of who the figurehead of the govt is.

I didn’t realize that. If she’s still friends with Elon after his heel turn, then she’s just bad faith both-sidesing.

Is she still friends with Elon? I thought her boyfriend got publicly exiled out of Elon’s circle a few years back.

From reddit

The fact that JD didn’t want fact checking just goes to show how bad it is. Fact checking for the most powerful office in the US should be mandatory.

“I’m here to debate, not to ensure that the truth is told!”

"I don’t wanna learn about what happened!

I wanna argue about what happened!"

Reminds me of the snl skit. “ it was my understanding there would be no math”

JD, “Hold on a second. You said that I’d be allowed to lie without repercussion.”

“stop lying and we won’t have to”

i wish any moderator would grow the balls to just say it

JD Vance could have started the debate by saying “I’m going to lie to you all night long and the morons who support my ticket will cheer it on the entire time because they are literally the stupidest people to ever live.” and none of his supporters would have blinked an eye.

It’s shocking really.

MAGA and Trump have literally ruined something that didn’t have an issue for 200+ years, both people involved knew they could stretch the truth and maybe exaggerate something but if they outright lied the people would know and revolt against them.

Trump has convinced half of America that lying about things you know aren’t true is perfectly acceptable and if you are called out on it then you are attacking them for it

I wouldn’t be so sure that this is a completely dumb move. Trump supporters for a while now have been kind of mocking the idea of “fact checking” and “debunking” because it so often contains liberal or neutral facts that go against their worldview.

They won’t admit that they’re wrong so they deride the concept directly, saying that the whole idea of fact checking is some weaselly liberal ploy because we never actually use facts but are throwing around the term loosely.

This is of course completely backwards but it means that attacking the idea of fact checking is actually pandering to their base, not just a childish whine that he’s getting caught in a lie. What’ll be interesting is that this strategy only works on through and through dumbasses so it won’t exactly be firing up the fencesitters or the moderate supporters if such a thing still exists.

The actual rule was that Vance and Walz would need to fact check each other, but moderators might interject during rebuttals.
