He’s maybe the preeminent authority on police violence in the US. Normally, an appeal to authority wouldn’t be advised, but it’s what everyone seems to enjoy doing in the thread (appealing to their own).
The current protests make it clear that “justified” to a lot of people includes running away, resisting, using foul language, and questioning the cops. And that sometimes it means doing everything “right” except having the wrong skin color and being able to breathe.
I mean “well more than half” of shootings being justified is not exactly a ringing endorsement of police judgement when it comes to use of lethal force.

As I read it, the author is not saying the police handle these situations well. The article is more about issues with the police shooting data.

Funny on 22 I was told Atlanta pd is not racist because 60% of the force is black and the chief was a gay woman.

Yeah their taser argument is mind boggling, it is used by police as a non lethal force alternative. But if they are faced with it it is a murder weapon?
If that is the case police should not even have tasers, or better yet they should not have guns.
Police across the country were put on notice they were going under a microscope and they shit the bed every single day.
The first thing white people can do is watch these videos. They’re disturbing and awful and they fuck with your mind, but you’re still alive. You HAVE to see this shit to believe it. I just wonder how much less likely that encounter ends in murder if the cops just approached it like “Let’s try to make sure you get home safely.” Instead they act like assholes, are hyper aggro and create a super heated environment that is completely unnecessary.
Instead they create an over the top hostile environment where a black man instantly fears for their life to begin with, they somehow let him take a taser, and then they chase him down and murder him.
I don’t know. Maybe we will set a precedent that of a police officer tries to tase you, you can shoot them with a gun.

Also it made me remember the timeline 3 years ago where police kept killing people and then people retaliated. Oddly the shooting of police in Dallas stuck with me simply because I lived just down the street where it happened when it happened. But my memory of the important events leading up to it were not as properly burned into my brain.
We know dorner got fired for trying to stop another officer from assaulting a civilian. We know a female officer in buffalo met the same fate. Do we know of stories where officers interfered with viscous assaults and murders and the abuser ended up punished. I assume we have never heard about them because they don’t make it public. Or else it literally never happens.
I wonder how much the George Floyd stand by officers were like the Eric Garner stand by officers who since they were being filmed were afraid to interfere because it might demonstrate liability,
