Poker Hands and Strategy

yeah, the cash action is ok, but the real money printing machine is the SNGs. Lowest rake, too.

If you know anything about short stack STT strategy, you can make great money at those. One year I went for a week and only played those plus one bracelet event…was my best year. Cashed in the event, too. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think you’re generally right for any series that the worst players are selecting those games. But, when you get enough players anywhere there are a lot of great games. There have been countless nights where I’m in a good to great game but there are 5 other great games.

must be nice. San Diego is way behind the PLO times. The best we can do is a BigO game a couple times a week at Oceans 11 (pre-COVID, of course).

I have to go to LA, and even there it’s sometimes hard to find a game.

I joined a $11 PLO8 tournament last night. Won one hand when I called a pot sized river bet with a crap two pair after the low draw bricked and that was pretty much it. What a stupid game.

if it’s low limit, you can pretty much assume that the other people are playing the most ridiculous shit, getting super aggro with their lows, and not understanding that stuff like TT73 is a bad hand. Best way is to play tight…which is boring but foolproof.

? I had a buddy vacation there a couple years ago and he said there was a 5/5 PLO game somewhere that ran all the time. Said it was soft as well.

That might have been Lake Elsinore’s game…which I guess I don’t really consider San Diego. Anywhere down here it’s either one table and impossible to get a seat or they have to turn it into a PLO/PLO8 or BigO mix. I don’t know why. And the one table lasts for a few months then eventually dies or converts to something split pot.

The day I come across multiple tables of PLO in the same place here is the day I can die a happy woman.

One of the reasons NLHE took off is because you can play it with a 100bb cap and while that kinda sucks, it’s still playable. This saves the bankrolls of new players and allows for low limit games to exist to introduce new players to the game. Live PLO doesn’t have that option, really. 1/2 plays only slightly smaller than a 2/5 or 5/5 after the game gets going, and sure, you can set max buy in for 1/2 at $500, but if you don’t get there at the start of the game you’re basically going to be playing one hand if its a good game.

So how do we introduce more players to PLO when you can’t limit their losses like you can in NLHE?

Yes, I used to work in a poker room and this was the type of shit we thought about all the time.

I’ve played in that BigO game a few times and I dream of going back. The players were so bad I just assumed they would go broke and the game would die before I have a chance to go back.

I think I adopted the strategy of never raising preflop in that game, as I am wont to do in great games. You can’t iso and when you make a hand it’s easy to build a big pot. You have huge implied odds, so why cut those odds by decreasing your SPR?

One way you make money in PLO8 is by recognizing how hand values are different from LO8.

Lol thats basically how I play low stakes live and I absolutely crush it

Oh, you’ve played in the Oceans BigO game? Yes, it’s incredibly soft. I love it. Most of those players are independently wealthy, so they weren’t going broke any time soon. Who knows now with COVID. Oceans is weird though. in both BigO and NLHE, sometimes the 2/3 game was way better than the 5/5, and other times it was the opposite. You really had to pay attention to who was playing where.

People do NOT understand hand strength in split pot games. Especially in pot limit games. Add that 5th card and it’s even worse (better?).

Post COVID poker probably isn’t coming back on my area

yeah, we’ve already lost 2 or 3 poker rooms, not sure when/if the others will reopen. I’m sure Oceans 11 and the other big card rooms will, but the tribal casinos are axing them left and right.

That fifth card makes people think they can play more hands, but it really doesn’t.

Sometimes, I think I fold QJo too often OTB against a MP 2.25bb open, sometimes I think I don’t fold enough.

I could feel the beat coming.

Considered folding the river, but couldn’t do it.

Fold pre, obv. All in 4 ways on the flop and AA comes in a distant third. Knew it was coming and had to grab my camera to document this fuckery. Worst preflop hand wins again.
