I think this may be one of those things were areas play a role in how the games play. The 1-3 in my neck of the woods is redic nitty with a very low 3bet pre with lots of set mining.

Update …I made a horrid fold.
V proudly showed 34hh! after I tank folded.
He also mentioned to his neighbor how he didn’t want to have the board pair or a 4th heart come.
we played for around 1.5hr … His 3bet freq was zero during this time and was drinking coffee - but he was a tourist, racked up to go see a show.

On more reflection all the hands where I lost to the effective nuts were at the Bellagio and aria. I guess I need to adjust for Vegas regs vs touristy fish.
Why would you ever play that kind of game for more than one orbit though? Like I get if you’re in a random town with one casino or its 30 minutes across town to the other to stay in a bad game. You don’t have this excuse in Vegas!

Sometimes, I see this when waiting for a tournament or a bigger game.
I played a crazy 1/3 spread limit game tonight where people were getting to showdown in huge pots with second pair. It was nuts. No fear (only stupidity) and I cashed out after 6 hours for $89/hr. I’ll take it. Also watched the guy to my left take down a 400bb pot with KQo on a Q high board where a complete noob folded with $60 behind when the third player in the hand bet into a dry side pot and folded his hand face down when lefty showed his queen. Ridiculously good game.

Man, I just play poker. I don’t hate action, but I don’t crave it either. I don’t change tables, I don’t change seats. Just give me a chair and I try to figure out that particular situation.
It’s possible I take some perverse pleasure in being able to beat games that drive other players crazy.

I’m just a simple, country poker player, but isn’t game selection the single most important skill for a pro by an extremely wide margin?

It means less when you have 1-2 tables at the stakes you’re playing.
Lots of people play poker for challenge over profitability. Most move up stakes for that but you don’t have to.
