I’ve had more than a dozen people over the years relay detailed fantasies of justifiably shooting someone. Like if you don’t know any super deplorables, that’s one thing. But there’s lots of them out there that talk about how they hope someone breaks into their house or car so they can murder them.
Listening to the MattY billion segment of Chapo made me realize that the analogy:
conspiracy theorists : economic conservatives :: centrist technocrats : Bernie-style leftists
holds up pretty well. If you ever manage to get a conspiracy theorist to admit their policy preferences, it always ends up being small government, lower taxes, less regulation. The same way centrist technocrats want universal healthcare, affordable college, paid family leave, etc, but have invented absurd roundabout ways to achieve them and crazy explanations for why the direct approach couldn’t work.
I thought the explanation for why the direct approach couldn’t work is democracy+morons.
Yglesias supported Bernie during the primaries fwiw.
Yes but also he wants a billion Americans cause reasons.

This was incredibly depressing but objectively excellent.
Amber has to go. Absolutely awful.

The World War 1 take was just terrible. The entire show ground to a halt with that one. Even worse was that it was right before they were gonna spend a solid half hour cracking jokes. Not sure if the other Chapos legit agreed or just didn’t want to stir shit up.
If they agreed they would have piled on. The episode was off to a fantastic start and she absolutely ruined it.
Yeah…yeah :(
Still a great episode though. War of uncles and cousins was pretty nice
My favourite part was when she started Ambersplaining history to the historian. You have a historian on the show, maybe ask him for his takes rather than regurgitating some shit you read in a book one time.
Whenever she starts with her bullshit I mash the “forward 30 seconds” button; about 90% of the time she’s still fucking talking after the jump.
My God, relax you guys.
Anyway, seems Virgil is starting a new podcast with Briahna Joy Gray. Haven’t listened yet, but will do at some point.
Will do as well. Kind of feel that Virgil doesn’t mesh all that well with the rest of the gang and that he’s too talented to be relegated to an occasional, witty comment before fading into the background of the show.
ETA: A panel show? I hope that this doesn’t end up becoming the millennial version of The McLaughlin Group.
I rip on Matt Yglesias and Ezra Klein a lot but their recent podcast on the filibuster is excellent.
Cliffs: it’s gotta go but that’s unlikely because individual senators have little to no political incentive to get rid of it.
I was pleasantly surprised to hear Yang say on Ezra podcast that he is for getting rid of the filibuster. I thought it was an issue that he would say something about both sides needing to be involved or something.
I’ve only listened to like 10 mins of Bad Faith and I’ll give it more time but I’m not sure the dynamic is going to work. Virgil’s role on Chapo is the straight man, essentially, like he’s sardonic but he basically plays it straight. If you think about the Beltway Garage episodes, Matt is the clown, hamming it up, even though that’s not always Matt’s role on the show. With Briahna, Virgil is called upon to play the clown more and it doesn’t suit him. Maybe it’ll evolve into a more serious podcast and shelve the levity, I think that would work better for them.
It’s funny how much the context affects how people come across, like Matt in the Inebriated History episodes is very different to Matt on the show generally, similarly I love Felix but he really goes to pieces when he tries to do a solo episode, he just isn’t funny without someone to bounce off.
Matt’s CushVlog is also a very different version of him.
Totally agree with your view on Felix too. He doesn’t seem to be used to running things himself. Episodes without Will completely fall apart.
Important to note that people should just skip the five-minute sound collage at the start of the first episode, really added nothing and felt weirdly self-indulgent. Agree it felt slightly shapeless and undercooked, hopefully it’ll find its feet.
