Has this been talked about yet? I am listening to it today but my brother said it’s really good. Dan Carlin giving his take on current events.
Never thought I’d see another Common Sense episode.
I subbed to this one a couple years ago but never got around to listening. Gonna give it another shot
It’s definitely quirky and not for everyone but I’ve enjoyed it a lot. Since it’s been running for several years, I wasn’t sure how to get into it. I ended up just going to the first episode and going through them in order.
I’m actually a couple years behind the current episodes still. Who knows when I’ll get caught up because my podcast listening time was during my car commute…
It’s a podcast by the creator of Hardcore History where he covers politics. He gave it up after Trump got elected because he felt that he had nothing left to say that other people weren’t already saying.
I hate them
This was unlistenable dreck. I got through it all because I was out hiking but I want my hour and 20 back. Carlin’s points in their entirety:
- Toxic partisanship is bad.
- The advent of the Information Age is destablising government and society
- It’s hard to have productive conversations with people because hardly anyone is well informed.
Thanks, Captain Obvious. Suggestions about what to do about any of this: zero. He even spends five minutes talking about how great it would be if there was a news organisation whose profitability were predicated on factual accuracy and reliability. Not gaming out how that would happen, just a literal “wouldn’t it be great if” West Wing stroke fantasy.
+1. I just finished it as well. I love DC and Hardcore History, but this was terrible and just both sides rambling.
Couldn’t get through it.
I think Will is very talented and we’ll be hearing his voice for a long time post Chapo
Yep, same page. Brace is a natural treasure
Red Letter Media did the definitive prequels analysis and no one should really try
I thought he made good points about how impeachment should be political and about the power of the executive branch. I agree with you on the other points.
I still like his perspective just because he has studied so much history.
Carlin’s takes on politics has always been the worst sort on centrist pablum. His big bugaboo in the old common sense was undefined “corruption.” The problem with politics was never (at least pre-trump) “corruption,” it was always people believing things that are false.
Chapo is lame because it’s mainly focused on criticism, though sometimes done well. The hard part of politics as solving problems, which requires more nuance than abolishing landlords or whatever.
He’s very much a both sides are corrupt type.
I mean in a broad sense he’s right but there are varying degrees of corruption and in general the Democrats don’t reach the level that Republicans do.
The reality is that a lot of his followers are deplorables and he doesn’t want to chase them away. After Trump was nominated, his forum basically became Chiefs Planet and it was eventually shut down.
Common Sense was always a side project for him. Hardcore History was what brought in the money.
There can be more than one problem with politics. Corruption is one of them.
Edit: I equate money in politics to corruption though, I suppose I could have a broader definition.
The Common Sense episode title was “A recipe for Caesar”. I thought it was worthwhile to consider the current climate in that framework.
