Omnibus January 6 Insurrectionist Thread

don’t have a strong opinion on Sorkin but it might be worth giving a listen to the last episode of The Town with Matthew Belloni where he interviews Sorkin (and he broke the news about the Jan 6 thing) bc he addresses this exact point and makes a direct comparison to The West Wing where virtually everything was fictional (I never watched tww, fwiw).

Sorkin made a choice with Newsroom that seems reasonable (per his explanation) on its face, but didn’t work in execution

Also fair but the joke does support my point of the objective skill on his structural writing. I am not sure he is a pigeon holed as you are saying given his topics have been sports, politics, poker, tech, classic tv shows ect. Yes the “Sorkiness” always sits at the surface but isn’t that also true of someone like Tarantino?

Anyway, I am always excited to see what he does next. Hopefully he isn’t directing, as he is not very good at it, but if a great director takes his script I think we are more often than not drawing live to something great.

I’ll concede in my centrist days past the west wing was a formative show for me and I still hold it possibly too high in my regard.

My favorite part of The Newsroom was that it made my hands sweat because it was a really good example of the pressure of working in live TV. It got all those old juices flowing and was one thing it did really well. The rest of it was a hard watch, even though it had a few very good performances in it.

Clovis, even though the show gets off to a rough start, you might want to check out Moonlighting, which was likely an influence on Sorkin’s fast-paced writing style (not mentioned but popular around the time he was coming up) if you haven’t already.

If you like being in car crashes and externalizing your internal monologue…

He would be top five for me for sure in terms of working writer directors.

I like when Sorkin releases something because I know I’m either going to like it or hate it, I usually don’t have indifference to whatever he puts out.

I am a big sorkin fan. I enjoy his tv stuff but like his movies more and I love a few good men. Probably a top five movie for me.

as someone who’s watched 3 seasons of moonlighting pretty recently, i think you’re right that it probably influenced aaron sorkin because it sucks. bruce willis is great in it, but he was great in everything.

it’s a stupid show and the people making it knew it was stupid while they were making it, and it showed.

I guess it’s good some of these state cases don’t involve Trump directly. He can’t interfere in the same way and they still produce “election interference”. These are battleground states, so especially bad for him. I don’t know if trials will start before the election, but godspeed.

Anyone want to guess the number of raids police forces go on where they aren’t authorized to use deadly force?
