I think I’m naturally good at this, but it’s not that hard to look neither like a threat nor an easy mark, treat everyone with respect and stay out of trouble. I did spend a couple nights in Glascow when I was about 25 years old. All I can say is that it was December, raining and windy and just a hair above freezing and always dark and pretty unpleasant while I was there.
Yeah, that’s me lol… Non threatening demeanor at all times. It helps in this business
I think in general the sprodatic violence of most citys has gone away since the 2,000 and steadily gone down and improved the city’s.
I wouldn’t have recommended a visit here before that, but would definitely recommend one now.
Well I’m writing about this massacre in El Salvador in 1981 right now, so it’s kind of on my mind: http://globetrotter.berkeley.edu/people/Danner/1993/truthelmoz01.html
Also the Art of Political Murder about Guatemala was really good. I’ve just started researching Honduras and Nicaragua - which seem to have taken somewhat different paths.
I just think there’s a barrier to killing domestic dissidents that for the most part we haven’t crossed, at least not obviously and en masse - like Central America in the past, and the Philippines now. When/if that happens were are truly fucked.
So I’m always looking out for what could break the seal. Those other countries have had a long history of government-affiliated death squads killing people in an obvious, public way designed to send a message. So it was more the norm for them than the exception.
I’m a strong believer in the idea that peace begats peace and war begats war. Changing from one to the other takes significant events and concerted effort - and in the case of war - years of propaganda to dehumanize the enemy - even if it’s “communists”. And yes I’m only talking domestically. I am aware we export war all over the world.

An Ebola outbreak now occurring in Guinea was almost certainly started by someone who survived West Africa’s historic 2014-16 epidemic, harbored the virus for at least five years and then transmitted it via semen to a sex partner, researchers reported on Friday.
The finding, based on genetic sequencing of virus samples taken from patients in the current outbreak, shocked researchers. Until now, the longest the virus had been known to persist in a survivor was 500 days
