Or that.

You can see the problem was the restriction on their ability to charge more. Emergency pricing! Maybe if it costs $500/night to heat your home it will change some people’s minds about that one thing anyway.

Oh great, broken nuclear power plants.

As far as off-grid solar…it depends. Solar panels work fine (really well) in space. They are fine with cold. The batteries have different requirements depending on the type of battery. Most lithium batteries can run ok below freezing, but you’ll eff them up if you charge them below freezing. I assume most of the commercial products have controls that prevent them from charging below freezing and that people in cold places keep the batteries inside. Here in SoCal I haven’t had to think about that and most people keep the batteries outside. Other chemistries handle the cold better, but there are limits as anyone with a car battery in super super cold temps can find out.

Texas has a wider political philosophy than that. They hate Yankees too.

Since there’s less sunlight during winter (not even considering the overcast days) my totally layperson opinion is that it probably wouldn’t be enough on its own to fully power and heat a house.

Indeed. They are building solar farms here as fast as they can due to how much sunlight we get. It’s cold as hell here like 9 months of year. Lol.

freezing cold take: the ongoing texas catastrophe will help Gavin Newsom survive his recall election.

Zara, to people who are very leery of the police, being pro-police is the same thing as being anti- protesters.

Was he really in trouble with that? Only people I’ve really seen doing it are right wingers. Though it would be cool if he ran and lost to someone more to the left.

What do the people wanting the recall expect? Someone who is full open for business? They obviously aren’t going to get a Republican like they want lol.

Of course “it depends” but very few people are heating with electricity and it’s not very efficient and photovoltaic solar panels aren’t the most efficient way to use the sun for heating.

As long as there’s some sun though people could get in electric blankets and be pretty comfortable.

Is that true? If yes, what’s the reason for that?

Last I heard the organizers had 1.4 MM signatures which have started to be verified by the counties. They need 1.5MM verified by next month I think, and their goal is to collect 2 MM to be safe.

Newsom has never been as unpopular as Gray Davis, but his polls have been pretty bad over the past month. The French Laundry dinner fiasco is the biggest mark against his handling of covid. the vaccine distribution started slow, but it’s ramped up alright.

However, there is no Arnold Schwarzenegger walking through the door with a clear anti-Newsom reform message right now. He should be a favorite to survive anyway, but it’s not a done deal.

Just providing a SITREP for the forum based on thread title: At this point in time and based on current observed conditions, 2021 will not be better. Additional SITREPS will follow.

It’s true and the basic reason is to avoid being subject to federal regulation.

an under-reported story nationally is the unemployment fraud in California (and apparently nationwide though I haven’t see much coverage of that angle.) EDD, the state unemployment agency, has had an enormous backlog on claims that they still haven’t caught up fully on, and there are reports of $10+ BILLIONS of dollars being paid out fraudulently (where? some to prisoners but a big leak happens to be organized crime in europe/asia/elsewhere) while a lot of self-employed struggle to get in the system. This issue will probably be brought into focus during the recall campaign.

Allowing the police to stand in front of school kids in an attempt to illicit sympathy for “how heavy” the riot gear is that they wear while suppressing dissent, and letting those police actions be framed as a “need to help people” is not a neutral act.

I agree with you that they did not explicitly say the Russian words that would = “Don’t protest”. But they are sharing a skewed perspective of reality, one in which they hope to gain favor or compliance.

This stresses me out. They overpaid me by a few thousand dollars because I stopped filling out weekly reports like the site says you’re supposed to do if you find a job but they just kept paying me unbeknownst to me.

Still haven’t heard from them and I sent them a support request that took months for them to get back to me and they didn’t help the issue at all.

Worried they’re gonna try to say it’s fraud or something.

Theme for the past 12 months seems to be stress testing various government systems in the USA and continuously falling short at every level.

i did. i do. i also understand the context of pro-putin propaganda to simultaneously paint the protests as (among other things) innocent children misled by navalny, and school administrators pressuring students not to attend protests, and authorities increasing penalties for young people protesting (including threatening to take them away from parents).
