Pretty sure doing an experiment with sold sodium or cesium and water was pretty standard in my parents’ generation.
Hmmm…
7% of Myanmaris are Karens.
Sounds about right.
Also, didn’t know this from the CIA factbook:
"etymology: both “Burma” and “Myanmar” derive from the name of the majority Burman (Bamar) ethnic group
note: since 1989 the military authorities in Burma and the current parliamentary government have promoted the name Myanmar as a conventional name for their state; the US Government has not officially adopted the name"
So, if you’d like to read the factbook entry, look under Burma.
I similarly got to see the speedboating sodium in science class back in the 70s.
wiki:
Nitrogen triiodide has no practical commercial value due to its extreme shock sensitivity, making it impossible to store, transport, and utilize for controlled explosions.
Well that explains it. Our group also did safety tests on materials for the company. Any formulation sensitive enough to be what we called “redline” wouldn’t make it out of the lab. This stuff would be right out.
I thought the military was already basically in charge and she was a puppet? I guess she fucked around and found out.
Is the coup just all the Karens demanding to speak to the manager?
Feel like it should be “demanding to speak to the Myanmar”
A+
pulling off a coup fake claiming election fraud? Trump gotta be very tilted right now
when i was a kid we used mercury medical thermometers. those things would break all the time, and we’d sweep them with our hands. it was good we didn’t have any pets, because they’d probably lick it up eventually. but i definitely remember my brother and me handling it in the palm of our hands, then tossing it in the garbage.
We saw sodium in water in about 1993 in the UK. I also remember that teacher doing some demonstration experiment with stronger acid than we were allowed, holding it up for the whole class to see and accidently sloshing some down his hand. Came in the next day with it bandaged up.
Many famous inventors, engineers, and scientists played with explosives when they were kids. Some almost blew off body parts or killed themselves. Edison set off explosions in his parent’s cellar. That seems like a more plausible explanation for his hearing loss than the story of the train conductor pulling him up by the ears. Bill Hewlett, David Packard, and Kary Mullis are others that come to mind.
I wouldn’t call it a loss that kids can’t so easily do such things anymore, but it is too bad kids can’t see in ways that really make an impact how things work. Maybe it would help us keep ourselves as a species from conducting potentially life-ending experiments.
in the production of acetylene from calcium carbide, contamination often leads to trace production of phosphine and arsine
Yikes. Those are some nasty gases.
seeing this on facebook etc. seems like it’s the other side of the MAGA coin.
how much of “that world” was made possible by US/western imperialism exploiting the third world, US white supremacy exploiting minorities domestically, and patriarchy keeping women from achieving anything significant?
I feel like a cartoon character that steps out of an airplane right before it crashes. Never mind why, that’s not the point of this post. What I want to know is, does that cartoon exist?
I remember it clearly and so does my brother. It’s a classic cartoon, in my memory probably featuring Bugs Bunny. The plane (or something) is plummeting to earth due to cartoon high jinks. At the last second Bugs (or whoever) casually steps from the (whatever) to the ground, narrowly escaping the crash.
I’ve thought of this cartoon many times over the years, but I can’t find it. I can find one where Bugs and a gremlin are in a plane that runs out of gas right before it crashes (Falling Hare). Then there’s the one with Yosemite Sam where Bugs uses air brakes to stop the crash (Hare Lift). But I got bupkis for Bugs or any other cartoon character stepping out of a crashing anything.
Anybody?
I’ve seen the one with bugs and the gremlin and thought that’s what you were talking about.
don’t see it elsewhere but RIP SCREECH
