Oasis stuff!

They just played again. Liam is still (once again) riding the coat-tails of the real talent, Noel.

Come at me. It’s always been this way!!

You know what, Champagne Supernova is okay.

There’s one real talent in the band.

Okay, so I have a story. I worked a bunch of times with the director of the Wonderwall video, who was a very big music video director in the 1990s and probably earlier. In college, I had a UK indie rock radio show (he was British), and he used to love talking about music with me. He worked at Stiff Records when it was founded to give you some of his music background.

One day, he is just straight up slagging Blur viciously (Oasis’s main rival band at the time). All of a sudden, he looks at me and says, ‘you’re awfully quiet right now, you don’t like Blur, do you?’. And I was like, yeah, I do. I didn’t go as far as to say they might have been my favorite band in college (I saw them in concert twice, once in Dallas and once in Boston), but it was close. I also played them every week on my radio show for the year and 7 months it was on air. I had high hopes for the song Pop Scene, which was my favorite from 1992, but it went nowhere. The director never looked at me the same way again…lol.

He would have been really disappointed to know I didn’t like Oasis at all in college (they broke a few months after my radio show ended) and I would have refused to play them because I thought they sounded too much like a regular rock band (Supersonic did nothing for me). My favorite song of theirs from that era was Up in the Sky (because of a live performance on a concert film I worked on with that same director as an uncredited assistant https://youtu.be/TWGIC-iJRPs?si=7Ehr2fACjLKUGGFe&t=1365), but I really didn’t like any of their stuff outside of Wonderwall (even with that 10dB too loud vocal) that I can really remember. The album version of Up in the Sky is really weak. There are maybe one or two other songs of theirs I liked but can’t think of them off the top of my head. It also didn’t help that Noel Gallagher is a raging a-hole and Liam is a raging psycho.

Seeing em soon. Talk Tonight is genius.

I don’t care for Oasis. But whoever did the sound effects on the Wonderwall video is a genius.

I think that might be the song that got the least reaction from the crowd sadly. My wife was disapointed as it’s one of her favorites. Crowd got more into it in half the world away.

Since it’s an Oasis stuff thread, here’s my remaster of Wonderwall:

Not to be that guy, but we have an entire Arts & Entertainment section, and it seems like this thread would be a perfect fit!

You’re that guy.

Saw them at the Rose Bowl last night. I am not a big fan of Oasis, I remember their hits and that they were a big deal. I remembered my wife liked them, so when tickets went on sale I asked if I should get some and she said yes. Also the Rose Bowl is 10 minutes away, so it seemed like an easy lift and a fun/active night for us - we are not “concert people” and generally for us a big night is Little Tokyo for sushi.

So, some observations:

  • I had no idea that SO many people are apparently Oasis superfans. 80,000 people at the Rose Bowl and I would say a solid 80% seemed to be having the night of their lives. Was especially surprised to see so many young people who were very tiny or not born when these songs came out. Two under-30 BIPOC guys in the row ahead of us knew every word to every song and were just incredibly into it. That whole scene was fun to see.
  • Back in my day, you didn’t wear a band’s merch to their concert. Has that changed entirely for everyone, or just for Oasis? Because people were decked out in entire Oasis outfits.
  • At the restaurant we went to before the show more than 50% of the patrons were from the UK. I doubt the percentage of fans at the stadium was that high, but a lot of people made the trip for this.
  • Liam may be crazy or on drugs, but I really was not aware how incredibly weird he is.
  • Cage the Elephant was an excellent opener, they really put on a show. Their frontman seems like the kind of guy who is a rockstar whether he’s on a stage or doing laundry.

Could hear the show from my backyard, was singing along to Wonderwall when I let the dogs out to pee!

I wore earplugs and am feeling very good about it.

yeah it was a similar experience at the meadowlands, near enough everyone seemed to have some merch on. also saw a couple wearing scum united shirts which was weird.

on the back of the shirts where they list the concerts etc it was just really strange to have all these famous cities - london, mexico city, sydney etc - with east rutherford instead of new york (yes i know where they were playing all you Jersey boys). I don’t buy merch really anyway but that would be a big let down if I did. You could get knock offs outside the stadium which had new york instead so I would get one of those.

yeah oasis are very good at the merch stuff. there were pop-up stores in every city they had shows in. we “waited” 5 hours to get in (you register in person and can check your position in line) just so she can buy a hat and t-shirt for the show.

Still funny how every time they get mentioned, people act like Liam just wandered in from the pub while Noel wrote the Bible of Britpop.

I thought everyone liked Oasis.
