Guns aren’t aggression. Only the misuse is. What you just described isn’t freedom and goes against the basic principal of a liberal society. That doesn’t mean there isn’t a limit to what should be allowed or even assault weapons shouldn’t be banned. But given that they are used to kill so few people, it doesn’t seem a like a very good place to start.
You could apply your logic to restrict everything. Speech can be used to get bad outcomes. Drugs, poker, Krispy Kreme donuts, cars, knives, etc

It is a balancing act. It isn’t an absolutist view. My default is people should be allowed to do what they want as long as they don’t harm others. There has to be a strong overriding reason to restrict something. Only a few hundred people get killed with assault weapons each year. It isn’t a very good starting point.

I apologize. I am just trolling. An assault weapons ban isn’t what is immediately brought up after shooting. New Zealand’s first response wasn’t banning assault weapons. Piers Morgan didn’t have an entire show devoted to it for months.

I am talking specifically about the political left which is why posted in the first place. Given that it is the most common solution being proposed, it seems reasonable to conclude that is the main solution to curb gun violence.
As far as I can tell with quick glance no one has explicitly said what their main proposal is to reduce gun violence. (Though I guess it is implicit in banning all guns.)
