npc12345 argues that actually guns are fine

I decline to agree to the concept of self ownership.

All civilization and progress comes from self-ownership. If you don’t own yourself, it means you have no rights and are subject to the whims of mobs. Anyone who doesn’t believe in self-ownership is morally depraved.

The United States was founded on the classical liberal ideals of thinkers whose philosophy is rooted in self ownership.

And sometimes also ownership of black people.

How many would be too many?

I want to own a fully automatic or a tank so i feel safe from the more crazy end of the 2nd amendment people.

There’s a trade-off. That some people on the opposing side won’t admit that, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t.

Assault weapons are used to kill a lot of people in the absolute sense. It’s not necessarily relevant that other guns kill more people.

On the one hand, will banning assault weapons save lives? I think the answer is yes, but obviously how many cannot be known.

On the other hand what is the cost? Well, almost all uses for guns can be served almost exactly as well or maybe better by other guns. None of home defense, target shooting and hunting are really suited best for these weapons. The cost is not letting consumers make a choice with is usually not a good choice anyway. Then the one “use” which you might argue assault weapons are actually suited for is that they are a good weapon for people to use to fight the police.

So now all civilization and progress comes from a meaningless concept?

There is this concept of the sovereignty of the body, which is one (and not the only one) of the foundations of liberalism. And there is the libertarian / acist mockery of that entire school of thought that always leads to absurd stances like the unlimited right to gun ownership. Hint: when somebody calls it self-ownership, it’s always the latter.

The idea of self-ownership is a perversion of the hierarchy of rights and seeks to elevate the right to property to a lexical priority when it should be subservient to the rights to life and liberty.

There are ~193,000 of them in the US and you can get one for ~$15,000 but there are a lot of hoops to jump through:

Weirdly there hasn’t been a mass shooting involving a fully automatic gun since then because it’s much easier to just buy an AR-15 from Walmart.

The pro gun argument is just so dumb. We already restrict weapons! In the USA! Until basically 2008 there were multiple rulings and precedents that restricting dangerous weapons was within the scope of the 2A! It’s basically only since the GOP made it a platform to appoint conservative judges has the scope of the 2A grown. It’s an entirely new concept! It hasn’t been this way for the vast majority of the history of the USA and doesn’t have to be going forward.

I haven’t rifle hunted in years, I am mainly a bow hunter. I also don’t own a hand gun. Anytime someone has wake up in an argument I know I can tune it out.

Instead of interminable gun control debate, why doesn’t USA#1 resolve this with an anything goes gunfight between supporters of the gun lobby on one hand and the military on the other?

Problem solved.

Fine with me…

So on a sensitive topic and difficult week for some, you decide to try and troll me over my comment towards JR, when you know I was talking about firearms is not a good look bro.

Ok… I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt here in that it’s not obvious I was just speaking of firearms.
If you hunt with Bows and stuff it’s fine with me.

You really think owning a gun is saving you from a tyrannical government? You know the government has tanks and fighter jets and drones right?

Not trolling. I own a rifle. I have hunted with a rifle. You said all hunters are part of the problem or complicit. I disagree with that.

I don’t…

No, the strawman argument presented by the npc types (quickly debunked in the first several posts of this thread) is that restricting AR’s is somehow infringing on the rights of hunters, or that deer rifles are “basically the same” as AR’s. Both are completely false. No serious hunters hunt with semi autos and it is not necessary whatsoever. you do not need a semi auto to hunt deer, or even elephants.

I don’t know any hunters that use a semi automatic rifle.

As someone who does not own a gun but hunts a couple times a year (and whose father owns enough guns for a militia), I am comfortable saying “most hunters are part of the problem or complicit.” It may not be all, but it’s probably pretty close.

FWIW I’m in favor of banning just about everything, maybe leaving bolt action rifles and pump shotguns but capping capacity to 3-5 bullets/shells.

Edit: given the clusterfuck that is this thread, I’d rather move this discussion to the other guns thread and leave this one to NPC’s trolling

Over 30K get killed with guns of all kinds. Sounds like youre for the banning of all guns.
