Non-Pol Hot Takes

The Russians should be recruiting him and offering a signing bonus.

Been away so long I hardly knew the place.

Is it weird that someone trolling people about music instead of politics is refreshing to me? It reminds me of a simpler time back when I thought trolling was more funny than dangerous.

Silver Jews: We Are Real

Is the problem that we can’t see or is it that the problem is beautiful to me?
Birds of Virginia are flying within you
Like background singers they all come in threes
Like background singers they all come in threes

Won’t soul music change now that our souls have turned strange?
Once a day, twice a day
When on and off collide
We’ll set our souls aside and walk away

We’ve been raised on replicas
Of fake and winding roads
And day after day, up on this beautiful stage
We’ve been playing tambourine for minimum wage

But we are real, real
I know we are real

Repair is the dream of the broken thing
Like a message broadcast on an overpass
All my favorite singers couldn’t sing
All my favorite singers couldn’t sing

Reading a work of fiction is no different than watching a movie, except there’s a better chance of it being good.

Reading a book about something that really happened has a much better chance of being interesting than a work of fiction imo.

But maybe not as much of an escape.

Warfare is basically teams of dudes playing elaborate pranks on each other only sometimes people die.

Bob Dylan’s voice has been shot for decades but a man’s gotta make a living somehow.

Bob Dylan was no redneck, he was a Jewish New Yorker posing as an Okie, but it’s 100% okay. He can be on Team White Trash any day, his music is legit and he is a worthy heir to Woody Guthrie’s throne.

I can understand how Euros might not recognize the distinction between rednecks and Okies, tho.

Bob Dylan grew up in Minnesota.

Wow, I didn’t know he was a product of the Midwest, but I am 100% down with that.

Would you believe that Bob Dylan is not even close to the best pop musician from Minnesota?

My two favorite Prince videos…

His most popular works doesn’t really show it, but good god could the guy shred a guitar

My best Dylan thing is inspiring this song:

Well, I’ll be damned
Here comes your ghost again
But that’s not unusual
It’s just that the moon is full
And you happened to call
And here I sit
Hand on the telephone
Hearing a voice I’d known
A couple of light years ago
Heading straight for a fall

As I remember your eyes
Were bluer than robin’s eggs
My poetry was lousy you said
Where are you calling from?
A booth in the midwest
Ten years ago
I bought you some cufflinks
You brought me something
We both know what memories can bring
They bring diamonds and rust

Well, you burst on the scene
Already a legend
The unwashed phenomenon
The original vagabond
You strayed into my arms
And there you stayed
Temporarily lost at sea
The Madonna was yours for free
Yes, the girl on the half-shell
Could keep you unharmed

Now I see you standing
With brown leaves falling all around
And snow in your hair
Now you’re smiling out the window
Of that crummy hotel
Over Washington Square
Our breath comes out white clouds
Mingles and hangs in the air
Speaking strictly for me
We both could have died then and there

Now you’re telling me
You’re not nostalgic
Then give me another word for it
You who are so good with words
And at keeping things vague
'Cause I need some of that vagueness now
It’s all come back too clearly
Yes, I loved you dearly
And if you’re offering me diamonds and rust
I’ve already paid

Except a light year is a measure of distance, Joan.

But man that’s a zinger of a last stanza.

I dunno. Maybe in the context of that first stanza a light year is used as a poetic device re. the full moon.

Or maybe she just fucked up and it’s a happy coincidence.

You could easily say a “couple million miles ago” in that spot and have it be fine for a song. (I know a light year is more than a couple million miles)

Since around the 1940s, I would argue.

Counterfact: Simon Cowell agrees with you Dylan bashers about his voice and guitar playing.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Simon
Fucking
Cowell

All you lot who want pitch perfect singing can load up your auto tuned songs now. I’d rather have music that sounds like it was made by humans.

Next: Neil Youngs falsetto was occasionally a little off key, so he be shite

Dylan’s voice was never fantastic, but he wasn’t really off-key like say, Nick Cave who is a terrible singer.

Ice cold take: Folk music and folk musicians are all terrible in every possible way.
