“There is clearly an epidemic that begs for an urgent response,” Dr. David C. Christiani of the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health wrote in an editorial published on Friday afternoon in The New England Journal of Medicine.
The editorial called on doctors to discourage their patients from using e-cigarettes and for a broader effort to increase public awareness about “the harmful effects of vaping.”
Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention echoed that call in a briefing.
“While this investigation is ongoing, people should consider not using e-cigarette products,” said Dr. Dana Meaney-Delman, who is leading the C.D.C.’s investigation into the illness.
C.D.C. officials said they believe that some “chemical” is involved as the cause but they have not identified a single responsible “device, product or substance,” Dr. Meaney-Delman said.
Dr. Christiani, author of the New England Journal article, wrote that it was not yet clear which substances in vaping were causing the damage. E-cigarette fluids alone contain “at least six groups of potentially toxic compounds,” the editorial said, and suggested that the mixed-up stew of chemicals might create new toxins. The journal also published today a study of two large clusters of 53 cases in Wisconsin and Illinois.
Wouldn’t surprise me if vaping ends up being more unhealthy than normal smoking.
It’s bad juice. If the problem was caping in general we’d have been seeing these types of illnesses and deaths for the past ten years, not a sudden surge in the past couple of months.
Yes or bad pens
Science guy on NPR was saying the vast majority of deaths were marijuana vaping with the suggestion that the epidemic has to do with black market unregulated products. In any case, RIP Chapo.
Probably but that’s not gonna stop the massive overreaction we are about to witness. One state, Michigan I think, is already about to ban all flavored vape juice in the state and I expect more states to follow because this is exactly like smoking except it’s not
California is trying hard. Actually, it’s tobaccofreeCA which is one of the most evil and shitty “non profits” ever to have existed.
Banning tobacco vapes will kill hundreds of thousands.
That “truth” outfit focuses exclusively on vaping now, apparently. I haven’t seen one of their ads targeting cigs in at least a year.
Because they already won that battle. No one smokes anymore. And if you do smoke, you have to hide in a corner in a back alley and you’ll still get dirty looks/people yelling at you. They won that propaganda campaign by making it so stigmatized people either quit out of shame or switched to vape. My personal favorite propaganda commercial is the one where the smoke goes through the guys apartment vents, out a window, and into another apartment where it suffocates a baby. Great stuff guys.
Now they’re going to do the same with vapes. Fuck them all. If my dad had had a vape, he would have probably lived 10 more years.
Fuck actual cigarettes, and fuck the people that force me to inhale that shit second-hand. That said, there have also been decades of studies on the harm that smoking does. Have there been any on vaping that have actually looked at long-term impacts? Have vapes even been around long enough to study that?
Given the incredibly shady history of the tobacco/nicotine industry in general, I’m leaning towards siding with the nanny state, but that’s because I’m pretty uninformed on vaping.
lol vaping
There have been 4 deaths or something right? I’m not sure a “vast majority” means anything if so.
He was talking about some number in the hundreds.
ETA: I found the article that goes along with the segment, and he must have talking about the lung disease, not death. My bad.
Everybody in this thread knows this is about vaping oil/extracts, right? Which is distinct from vaping flower, which is also a way to use cannabis to get high.
Just making sure because in the other thread it seemed like there was confusion between the two and maybe even some people who didn’t realize vaping flower is a thing.
People are using some lipid based thing in the mix and it’s turning to gas at a very high temp. Then that hot oil is getting inhaled by people. Unsurprisingly this is causing serious lung damage. It’s happening to THC pens because it’s a highly unregulated black market.
This is basically just fentanyl/wood alcohol all over again. One more good reason to end the war on drugs ASAP.
Remember kids prohibition of a product that a lot of people want will just result in bad people dominating that industry… and they will do unethical shit like using dangerous adulterants to raise profit margins. Stuff no legit business would do because the legal liability would massively outweigh the profit potential. Illegal business = not worried about getting sued.
Legal multi-billion dollar business aren’t worried about being sued.
Think the Sacklers give a fuck about a few lawsuits? They have their billions from pushing drugs. Lawsuits are nothing more than bothersome flies to them.
The Sacklers should have been worried about it. They are probably going to prison a good chunk of the time in the long run, and will definitely end up personally bankrupt some even larger % of the time.
People do stupid shit sometimes.
But the Sacklers at a minimum sold pills that did what they said they did. They didn’t adulterate the product with random quantities of fentanyl.
I know it’s horrible but i want to be at this point in life someday. I promise i will use it for good.
The fact that you plan to use it for good is why you’ll never get there.
lol when was the last time a billionaire went to federal pound-me-in-the-ass prison?
At worst they get an anklet and are confined to their multi-billion dollar mansions for a few months.
