Err, they kinda nailed it? I’m not saying this is top superhero fare in general, but it’s clearly better IMO than the other offerings this year.
It’s not fucking annoying like Thunderbolts and that movie’s grand strategy of “spam a billion jokes, bat .087 on them.”
It didn’t have any prolonged lulls like I felt like Superman had.
It didn’t look cheap and shitty like Captain America: Brave New World.
So on that basis, it’s the best of the four. Given how visually shitty these movies have looked recently, I was very pleased with how good they made Galactus and Silver Surfer look. I would have bet on worse. I kind of would have bet on worse when it comes to most things about this movie.
I’ll say that Pedro Pascal is…not a great fit for Reed Richards. Much preferred him in both Materialists and Eddington. But it’s not a major weakness in the movie. The other F4 casting was good.
I’m not saying this movie made the juices rush to my balls or anything, but it was better than I was expecting.
Solid 3.5/5, and if I were forced to tweak it I’d be closer to giving it a 4 than a 3.
Oh, and a bonus: not one damn second spent on connecting the F4 up to the rest of the MCU. I extend a hearty thank you for that. Whatever a person thinks of the movie, it isn’t a damn homework project that insists on connecting to the never-ending larger franchise.
I mean, that day is definitely coming for them soon, but I’m pleased that they actually got a true stand-alone movie.
Hah, I was waiting for the other shoe to drop connecting it to the MCU, even to the point where I was like 'OK it feels like the movie is concluding. When is a portal going to open up?" and the movie just ended. Good for them.
Watched Happy Gilmore in anticipation of Happy Gilmore 2 tomorrow. I kind of think Happy Gilmore is a perfect movie. I used to play the shit out of the VHS all through high school. I’ve probably seen it 50+ times and it never gets old. The pacing is really incredible. Just good scene after good scene. Tons of iconic lines and characters. A masterpiece.
5/5
Can Happy Gilmore 2 reach the same heights? Almost certainly not, and my expectations are low while hoping to be pleasantly surprised with a decent movie. Either way, I’m excited to get more time with these characters and it will in no way tarnish the stellar reputation of the original for me if and when this sequel disappoints. Christopher McDonald and Adam Sandler are treasures and if I can laugh a few times while watching Happy and Shooter Mcgavin square off, I’m gonna enjoy myself.
Totally. I’m hoping to be pleasantly surprised. Hopefully it’s more a return to form like TG Maverick than Superman Returns. But as you said, the sequel will either be good or forgotten. It will in no way tarnish the quality of the original.
For you horror guys, Red Rooms (2023) is outstanding. Indie suspense thriller about a supermodel/online poker pro/super hacker who becomes obsessed with the trial of a serial killer. With unsettling things to say about our fascination with true-crime media. Reminds me a lot of Fincher’s Seven.
Guess it just sort of depends where you’re drawing the line. Psychological horror like this and Se7en feels more mainstream to me than stuff that leans heavily into blood and guts, but maybe I’m just taking my own personal biases and labeling those as more normie-friendly.
Is it as good as the original? No, but it’s pretty good. Fans will be pleased.
My only real complaint isn’t even a complaint. I think the movie is weaker than the OG just because Happy’s motivation isn’t as strong. You can’t beat Happy trying to save his grandma’s home.
