F1
Traveling yesterday and this was an option. Seemed like the perfect time to get this out of the way. And, as predicted, it sucked.
The plot is predictable, cringeworthy and above all deeply, deeply stupid. At least the Academy didnāt reward the writers with a screenplay nomination like they did with Top Gun Maverick.
The Life of Chuck moves up again as this takes the place of If I Had Legs Iād Kick You as my least favorite film of the year. At least both of those films tried something, and even though I didnāt like the outcome, I at least could apperciate the effort. This I just have no respect for at all.
Blue Moon
Also available on my flight, so letās knock this one out of the way as well.
More of a theater play than a film, as the setting is just one location and the story plays out in real time (or close to it). Ethan Hawke gives a masterful performance of Lorenz Hart on the night it becomes clear that Rodgers and Hart is effectively over and the dominance of Rodgers and Hammerstein has begun.
Dialogue is smart, even if I think they went a bit overboard making Hart so pathetic. Biggest complaint though is that Margaret Qualley just did not work in that supporting role.
Solid film that Iād put in the mid-tier of the BP nominees had it earned one.
F1: 2/10
Blue Moon: 7/10
You may like the movie Words and Music about Rodgers and Hart.
I generally canāt stand musicals, but that one was quite good to me. It has a 6.4 on IMDb, so it shouldnāt waste your time at least.
(Seemed like the perfect time to watch a movie you stood a fighting chance at enjoying, you mean.)
I really do think Ethan Hawke should be in much stronger position here to actually win, but I realize itās a pipe dream. I donāt think Iāve probably ever seen a better performance from him. For that matter, Andrew Scott crushes it. That moment when he sees Hart spiraling and suddenly course-corrects is so good. I also think Bobby Cannavale is great as the bartender.
Did you watch The Good Lord Bird?
No, this is the first Iāve heard of that.
Iāll co-sign both of those.
Qualley is the only performance in the whole film that Iād say isnāt very good or better.
Yeah, no disagreement, I generally always like her but this movie is not a shining moment on her end. I didnāt think she was distractingly bad or anything, but her character didnāt quite do it. Her biggest scene is one where Hawke acts circles around her.
It is one of his best performances Iāve seen and he didnāt even get an Emmy nom. It was pitch perfect when it very easily could have been way over the top. Itās a very good and also often funny show for sure worth watching.
His command of that role made it extremely obvious how great of an actor he is.
Um, it rocks
Watched twinless last night, has the guy from send help as the main character, he does a pretty good job, ending left me a bit wanting but I would recommend
Also predator badlands is on Hulu now
@LKJ have you seen The Ugly Stepsister yet? I have a feeling that based on your conclusions of The Substance you would appreciate this much better
No, hadnāt planned on it. Itās body horror, right?
It is, its also Norweigan and genuinely funny with a similar message to The Substance but I think ultimately told better.
Its gross, for sure, but if you handled The Substance there isnt much worse here
Well I handled The Substance insofar as I didnāt get up out of my seat and run screaming out of the theater, but I do dislike body horror elements basically 100% of the time. I like movies like The Fly and Scanners in spite of those scenes, not because of them, and I always get the sense that there are sickos running around actively enjoying those parts.
I know this one gets solid reviews, but Iām not very confident it would be my thing.
Fair, I thought of you watching it because I know you disliked the overhype of The Substance and this is so similar in theme without being grossly overhyped by everyone. I could totally get someone not into body horror not enjoying this, but I personally thought the whole outweighed the sum of its parts.
I am not sure the body horror of The Substance is comparable to The Ugly Stepsister. The Substance was gross. Stepsister is more uhā¦painful? I had to look away from The Substance, but scenes in The Ugly Stepsister made me lose my breath.

No notes. Might be a career best from Alison Brie. This is a movie with many interpretations.

Is it ever going to replace traditional art? No.
Unfortunately, the appetite for traditional art will only get smaller.
