You’re really selling Will Smith short, man. The reason he was the biggest movie star in the world when he was was specifically because of how good he was in movies like those (his humor/action in action thriller movies is really unmatched in his generation).
He would have worked in all three, and each one of those movies might have been better with him in them. He really had something that very few people have had and he threw it in the sh**ter making movies that were out of his wheelhouse that turned his mainstream audiences off. He basically could have and probably should have been president if he hadn’t thrown it all away. He turned down Donald Trump’s role too, I guess. Thanks a lot, Will.
i feel like i tend to not like the genre of movies he tends to do. and then i think about genuinely enjoying rush hour and shanghai noon, the fifth element, movies that are right in will smith’s wheelhouse, and i think i just don’t like the movies he does because he’s the one ruining them. i liked enemy of the state and the first men in black was good. i don’t even know the last time i saw a movie that was good that had will smith in it
A person from the comedy genre, people which the Academy hates with the fire of a thousand suns, has 3 Oscar nominations and one win. This qualifies as he stinks in everything he’s in. This type of take is why I will never take anything you say about creativity or artistry seriously.
Enemy of the State was basically when he rejected his ‘type’ and decided to mostly do more serious roles. Enemy was extremely dark for him and probably the first time he played a mostly unlikable character. He tried to recapture that with Hancock but I never saw it and it didn’t seem to help his career.
If you haven’t seen Money Talks, watch that. Rush Hour wouldn’t have been made if that didn’t exist first. Just remember scum of the earth Ratner made it too.
And we are talking Will Smith in inception instead of one of the GOATs Leo. Like that dudes film history absolutely smashes a donk like Will Smith lol.
Back when he had the world at his fingertips, he tended to be pretty dreadful at picking the right projects. But I never felt like he lacked a lot of good qualities as a movie star. He was an above-average actor with a boatload of charisma.
It’s kind of funny that my instinct was to refer to him in the past tense as if he’s dead, but I’ll just let the wording stand.
leo is the greatest actor of our generation and he spends his life in between projects in a bacchanal, slamming cheeseburgers and bikini models nonstop on a yacht for months at a time. he’s like a heterosexual marlon brando.
I don’t think Will Smith would have been as good as any of the leads in Inception, The Matrix, or Django Unchained, BUT…he would have been good in Inception. Probably would’ve been fine in The Matrix, but Keanu’s acting style fit better. Honestly, I think the biggest gap between what was and what could have been would’ve been Django. Foxx killed it. Imagine Smith in the scene where Django blows up the Aussies and frees the slaves from the cart instead of Foxx - not a possibility.
How is it even possible that people watch these movies without absolutely seething contempt for Merry and Pippin? They exist almost entirely to fuck everything up. It takes almost two whole movies for them to do anything remotely non-destructive, and that thing is for one of them to mumble to Treebeard, “hey, maybe go that direction instead.”
I swear there’s some Baby Groot shit going on here where people have just decided that if a being is exceptionally small compared to others, they must imbue winsome qualities onto them without any actual evidence to support it. Except that in the Lord of the Rings, this is worse, because you actually HAVE two worthwhile hobbits who aren’t actively fucking everything up all the time. Given that, just treating every hobbit the exact same on the basis of “they’re just so small!” is completely ridiculous.
Any competent fellowship would have responded to “we’re coming too!” with “LOL no, GTFO.”
Bro, what? Those guys are the heart and soul of the whole franchise, it’s like their coming was like the falling of small stones that starts an avalanche in the mountains and shit.
