Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 3)

What is the American action movie that delivers the best return per dollar? Is it Maniac Cop II (budget: $4M in 1990, ~$9.8M today)?

“Sometimes I sing and dance around the house in my underwear. Doesn’t make me Madonna. Never will.”

This movie is fuckin wild. Goes places you won’t believe. Maniac Cop II is definitely underrated and a worthy contender though.

Avenging Force (1986)

A senator is targeted by the Pentangle, a right wing paramilitary group. His pal, a former CIA agent and martial artist, tries to help him. The group kidnaps the agent’s sister and tries to hunt him down, “The Most Dangerous Game” style.

Streaming on Prime, $4million in 1986

This movie has almost the same budget as Maniac Cop 2 ($4M late 80s dollars), I gotta see how it compares.

I will maintain that my man Larry Cohen pulled off some world-class practical stunts and action scenes given the limited budget he was playing with.

Hell yeah

So for those that don’t know…Hunter Schafer is trans.

After the success The Super Mario Bros movie it is a stone cold lock we see a Zelda movie in the next few years. If they make it live action rooting for Hunter hard. If it is animated it will be a normal voice cast group.

Not only is it a lock, I believe they have already anounced a release date in 2027.

Edit: looks like May 7

I mentioned in my brief review of Friendship that the best line of the movie was from a cameo by Conner O’Malley. My wife and I lost it in the theater at this part.

For those who haven’t seen the movie, in this scene, there’s a party going on inside and O’Malley is standing on a chair giving a quick speech. Obviously don’t watch if you don’t want to take any chances on spoilers, but this isn’t extremely spoilery (except for the surprise of the line):

Ok, I watched Avenging Force again and given your proposed criteria, Maniac Cop II is the clear winner for now. I can’t think of another one off the top of my head with such a small budget delivering that much action and effects.

Invasion USA came to mind but that had a $10 million budget in 1985.

I still want you to check out Avenging Force given your appreciation for “so bad it’s good” movies and B movie action flicks. And Invasion USA as well if you somehow missed that one, though I doubt it.

Tarantino getting 20 million from Netflix for once upon a time in Hollywood sequel. DiCaprio was offered three million for a cameo but turned it down.

So does this still hit theaters?

I was wondering about that too. Tarantino is not a fan of direct to streaming but he is not directing this just writing it.

I think it will have the brief awards window for sure, whether it gets a wide release hard to say. Has Netflix done that before? Amazon has multiple times.

Gerwig negotiated a wide theatrical release with Netflix for her next movie, but I think that’s a pretty significant break from anything anyone else has gotten. Netflix usually just runs its award hopefuls the bare minimum number of times in NY and LA and then takes it to the service.

Netflix could have given us Pulp Fiction 2.

Cowards.

$13 on Fandango today. Insane value

Stop wanting these things that shouldn’t exist!

At least with your True Lies 2 wish it wouldn’t be dishonoring anything meaningful.

How is this not called Twice Upon a Time in Hollywood?

I think it was originally a script that was not meant to be a sequel but just took place in the same world. I thjnk it was called something like “The Scriptwriter”. But it might have morphed into a sequel if not in name maybe spirit. It’s not clear to me.
