Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 3)

28 Years Later might actually get me out to the theater.

I’m kind of laid up this weekend. I watched Before Sunset, which shook me out of my emotional torpor. Then I watched Dead Poets Society for the first time in decades and now I’m ready to seize the day. I have Dazed and Confused on deck. What else should I watch?

Delirious (1992) is the closest we’ve ever gotten to a live action Looney Tunes. It is also in no way good. John Candy is fun to watch, but does that carry the film?

I’m trying to awaken my mind here.

I wonder if My Dinner with Andre still holds up?

Watched the first two recently. 3rd reminds me of what my friend is going through and makes me sad. 4th I know Simba dies which makes me sad. 5th is intriguing.

It’s sobering to realize my graduating class of ’87 was closer to Dazed and Confused ('76) than American Pie ('99).

That’s a good clarification since I’m really bad at NYT Connections and thought you were giving very little to go on, so I just threw out movies of a few scattered genres.

Umm, I don’t know. I really am Mann-pilled myself, so I honestly think Jamie Foxx’s arc in Collateral could be the type of thing you could get something out of if you feel any aimlessness as part of what you’re going through from a mindset standpoint. But maybe you’ve seen that movie.

Watch The Crow imo. A badass movie with a badass soundtrack. Like I never regret rewatching it. And the sequel is at least interesting.

Ooo what about horror?

The Craft
From Dusk til Dawn
The Frighteners
The Devils Advocate
Death Becomes Her
Sleepy Hollow

I’m thinking more of stuff like Brazil or Clockwork Orange that kind of blows your mind. I forgot how much impact Dead Poets had on me.

I wonder if Platoon holds up. I’m guessing no since Wall Street is about the only Oliver Stone movie I still like.

I haven’t watched Amadeus in forever and I still think about it a lot. That must be a good sign.

I guess the fact that Dazed and Confused is in your lineup is making my brain misfire and is rendering it unable to answer the prompt very well.

Great movie, but what’s it unlocking if that’s what you’re seeking? That might give me more of a read.

Well there’s a Linklater/high school kids trying to figure out who they are through-line from Dead Poets and Before Sunset. But also it’s the kind of movie that makes you think about life and stuff. Then again they all do. I dunno.

I would say that Dead Poets Society and Dazed and Confused were two of the seminal introspective movies of my formative years. I feel like there’s some other ones on the tip of my tongue.

If you’re thinking coming-of-age, there aren’t many better than Lady Bird. Granted that it’s not a male protagonist and maybe not as directly relatable.

The Last Picture Show would be a strong option if you haven’t seen it.

May I counter offer Mid-90s, written and directed by Jonah Hill.

Actually I prefer to just demand of people watching movies that they find an entry point that isn’t so specifically about them. Let your brain do a little translating and find the way in. If it’s a worthy movie you should be able to get there.

Lady Bird is amazing. I will have to give mid90’s another try, only made it like 5 minutes.
