A hospice nurse working at a New Orleans plantation home finds herself entangled in a mystery involving the house’s dark past.
I forgot how good this is. Kate Hudson plays the role perfectly, balanced on a thin line where her character needs to be just as scared of the plausible explanation as she is of the paranormal one.
Great mystery. Great twists. Great ending. Not quite as deep, but fans of Get Out will enjoy this shrewd satire of racism.
The screenwriter’s other movies include the American version of The Ring, Arlington Road, Top Gun: Maverick, and F1.
In this particular case? I honestly don’t think so. Isn’t basically everyone (normie or otherwise) who assesses this movie going to make some kind of comment about the structure? The movie pretty much begs everyone to do that. Bigelow was just betting on the overall reaction to the structure being positive.
That doesn’t make the reactions to the structure positive. I think the majority (or at least plurality) view in this thread is that it’s a worthwhile movie burdened by a bad choice. I doubt this is too uncommon among positive reviews generally. It did tension-building well. It did other stuff less well.
I would say it it’s in my top 5 Hitch and for sure best of the 40s, although it’s been so long that I don’t remember the specifics of the ending…
Actually even though I love Hitchcock, trying to think of the ending of his movies, none of them strike me as especially memorable (I guess “train goes into tunnel wink wink” at the end of North by Northwest would be the closest lol)
I think I still like Rebecca more at this point in terms of his best of the 40s, but this rewatch of Notorious made a seriously strong case. Top five Hitchcock is still a tough list to crack. At this point I’m inclined to say Rear Window, Vertigo, North by Northwest, Rebecca, and Rope as a top five, but I can’t rule out putting Notorious in this tier.
This is the end of Notorious (the final eight minutes), though if you’re fuzzy on the movie it probably wouldn’t hit as hard since it does feed from the whole build that leads up to it.
Of course, it looks like a person could just watch the whole thing in high quality on YouTube right now.
Bring Her Back- Mostly a bad PG13 horror movie but with some extreme gore you haven’t seen in any of those movies. Strange, The Substance wayyy better.
I see this guy a lot when I’m doomscrolling and he puts me on tilt (not his content/opinions, just his delivery/cadence, though an earlier reel from him about this movie did sort of annoy me because he said “house of dynamite is the scariest movie about nuclear war since… oppenheimer” well gee whiz man how many nuclear annihilation movies have there been in between?
Finally watched this. Was excited, and it certainly didn’t disappoint in the first 2/3 to 3/4 of the film. A fun riff on the vampire theme.
That said, the ending felt a little rushed, so I can’t say I wasn’t a little disappointed. But really that’s only because the first half was excellent. Direction and music were outstanding.
I’m glad films like this are having critical and financial success, but I highly doubt that this will end up being my favorite BP nominee.
