Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 3)

That’s a very surprising but welcome review. I thought for sure this would be as bad as The Continental show.

No, it’s surprisingly good. Better than the other recent blockbusters for sure. Wick fans should all see it.

I was so pumped for this and then I learned it was animated, ugh very disappointing

An old-school 90’s anime version would have been great, but the animation style of this one just didn’t do it for me.

Is Batman superhuman? He did all of these things in the comics.

Meanwhile, I saw Materialists (2025) last night and think the final act is the weakest part of an otherwise very strong movie.

I’ve been pondering ever since about just how much it weakens the movie for me, but overall there’s a lot to like and I’m inclined to think I’m going to rate it above every non-Sinners movie so far this year despite the issue I have with it.

Batman has been around for 85 years in various incarnations. There’s little in common between Adam West’s Batman and Christian Bale’s Batman. There is a wide variation in tone and skill set. Some Batman’s are apparently Superhuman, some are not.

Here’s a semi-serious answer to a not very serious question: Batman’s skills don’t matter. He is a symbol of masculinity, and that will vary with the social context at the time and the writer. If the writer wants Batman to be a quasi-libertarian (or fascist) vigilante because the writer thinks that’s what makes someone a Real Man, then that’s what he’ll be. I think that most Batmans are written this way or sort of like this. If the writer wants Batman to be sensitive and vulnerable because the writer thinks that’s what makes someone a Real Man, then that’s what he’ll be. The classic 1990s Animated Series was like this. His powers are whatever are needed to align to the storytelling.

Ive only ever really seen Johnson in Fifty Shades and Madame Web (“seen” here as thats through clips and reviews. Never bothered to sit through either of those trash factories.)

How is she as a lead here? The stuff I have seen her in always comes off as stiff and wooden.

I like her. I don’t think she’s a great actress, but I think she’s a good one. And she’s definitely the fulcrum of this movie, clearly the lead rather than this being a three-way equal partnership. I think she works well in this role.

Really no complaints about the acting at all.

This was good. Clint Eastwood does what he does best. He’s an old guy in need of extra cash who starts transporting drugs for the cartel. Bradley Cooper costars as a DEA agent and does well. Several great scenes with lots of tension despite not much happening. It’s on Netflix US.

Oh, so he had dementia all the way back in 2007

Thoughts on this movie

Thought:

A movie I would never watch in a million years

I saw it way back when it first came out. It was deeply affecting. Made me scared of sex and anyone who wanted to have it. But also felt cathartic to see a representation of the hypersexualized youth culture I grew up in.

I was thinking of watching it again. It’s on Dailymotion.

I thought it was great when I first saw it. Now that I’m nowhere near the kids’ age and older than their nonexistent parents, I might not like it as much.

Another one I thought was really good that I’m not sure I want to watch now is Thirteen.

I vaguely remember the movie, but my clearest memory about it is from the song Guilty Conscience where Dr. Dre is trying to talk the guy out of assaulting a passed out 15 year old by referencing the movie KIDS as an example of what could go wrong if he does it… So I assume the KIDS have lots of wholesome teenage fun and live happily ever after, right?
