Ninja Thyberg’s debut feature PLEASURE is a journey into the American porn industry and follows 19-year-old Bella from Sweden, who arrives in Los Angeles with the dream of becoming the next big porn star. The film is raw but offers both a human and humorous portrayal of a male-dominated world seen from a female perspective.
Unflinching. Great for fans of Anora and probably Boogie Nights. If you saw the documentary Hot Girls Wanted on Netflix, then you have an idea what kind of rough stuff the movie will explore. I must emphasize that this was a tough and intense watch.
It’s free on Tubi.
At the 57th Guldbagge Awards, the film received seven nominations, including Best Film and Best Director for Thyberg, and won three, including Best Actress for Kappel. Other awards nominations the film has received include the 2021 British Independent Film Award for Best International Independent Film as well as Best Director for Thyberg and Best Supporting Female for Reustle at the 37th Independent Spirit Awards.
Great performance from Rose Byrne. Conan and Asap Rocky were great as supporting actors. I would not recommend this movie to anyone. It’s a 2 hour panic attack that is very effective in making you feel as stressed and full of guilt as the central character whose life is spiraling out of control trying to support a sick child with the world falling down around her. I pretty much left the film with PTSD. I do not want that.
Rewatchables doing a Redford month after this next episode (Airplane) drops.
They’ve already done Butch Cassidy, The Natural, and Indecent Proposal. I imagine the lineup will look something like The Sting, All the President’s Men, Sneakers, and maybe a more modern one like Spy Game. Though I’m hoping they go with his best directorial work and include Quiz Show in the month.
In order to obtain research funds for her studies, a scientist accepts an offer to participate in an extraordinary experiment: for three weeks, she is to live with a humanoid robot, created to make her happy.
This was a lot more fun than I expected. The opening situation at the diner hooked me and I never looked back. This is wonderful for fans of Her who want something a little less elevated.
Yes, it is in German. But the performances are worth listening to the German language and just following subtitles.
PS. Lololol I thought this was a trans film from the poster and title!
Three Canadian women’s diverse stories illuminate the complex relationship between female sexuality and shame in this documentary.
One of the women is trans!
This was quite progressive for 2014. A great exploration of what these three women went through to discover themselves.
Longer description:
While we live in a highly sexualized society, the messaging around female sexuality is distorted and rife with shame. What women should look like, who women should want, what women should desire…in fact, who women should be, is dictated to us from screens and pages and people. INSIDE HER SEX is a thought-provoking, feature-length documentary that explores female sexuality and shame through the eyes and experiences of three women from different walks of life, each brave enough to chart her own course of sexual discovery: Elle Chase, a popular sex blogger, Candida Royalle, the creator of Femme Productions Inc., a feminist, adult film company designed to speak with a woman’s voice and Samantha Allen, the ex-devout Mormon and current gender, sex, and tech writer for The Daily Beast. Through varied, candid and intensely personal interviews, INSIDE HER SEX will delve to the core of these three women and their sexuality, beginning a much needed conversation around female sexuality and shame. Essential viewing for Gender and Sexuality Studies.
Relatively sure that the people who need this disclaimer are a bit more deserving of “uncultured swine” status than people who haven’t seen A Few Good Men.
(Shoutout @eyebooger, still looking forward to your Dog Day thoughts.)
Watched The Big Lebowski for the first time yesterday. I really enjoyed it, but im a bit surprised it has such status as it does. Its an incredibly goofy movie.
Possibly. On first watch it gave a very Dumb and Dumber vibe, which was a good movie, but I dont feel has the same kind of reverance or staying power today as TBL.
I think that is because D&D is just a goofy comedy. TBL has all sorts of mature themes and portrayals that I think are easy to miss on first viewing because of how funny the movie is.
I tend to agree with the Blank Check guys that The Big Lebowski is much more analogous to something like The Long Goodbye than it is with the broadest comedies.
