high and low (1963)
front-loaded most the drama in the first half. second half more of a police procedural. loved the bald fat cop who hates all rich men. adored mr gondo. unrealistically handsome detective was a little too handsome to be a real detective irl but great character, great acting.
5 bags of popcorn the spike lee remake is guaranteed to suck. you can’t remake a move this good. you shouldn’t be allowed, even if it’s japanese. plus you got a guy in it who doesn’t even like movies

Didn’t know this was being remade. I agree with you, although A24 has only put out movies I enjoy, and even if it wasn’t them I’d still go see it.
A long time ago I heard that Ikiru was being remade with Tom Hanks, once again no way it could be as good, but I would have seen it for sure.
I’m hopeful on the new High and Low, I think the idea could translate to American culture.
I was hopeful too. It’s…okay. Having one of the worst musical scores in the history of cinema is an odd choice though.
Ikiru was remade with Bill Nighy not long ago. Title was Living. Supposed to be decent, but haven’t touched it. Ikiru didn’t really land for me to begin with. Arthouse is running a Kurosawa series now though, and I plan to give it a second chance.
First viewing of Yojimbo tomorrow.

Watching Witness now. I like any movie where the hero has to be nursed back to health in some rural setting by either a hot woman or a village elder. Always works for me.

First hurdle on my Jinu demon Halloween outfit. I need to buy a gat, a Korean hat. So I find some on ebay, shipping from Korea. I add it to the cart and get warning about tariffs. OK I’m irritated at paying more but I’ll just consider it a sales tax designed to help local Korean hat makers in Texas 
. Anyway I was expecting a number, but no they point you to the government tariff tables and say good luck. They are indecipherable, at least to someome shopping for a hat. I’ve need to know what material it’s made out of with a million exceptions. I couldn’t even do search on the word Korea. So now I’m just going to have to bite the bullet and hope it’s something like 10 percent or something.

I still find it so jarring to have the first hour be truly GOAT-level cinema and then for the movie to go, “Okay, we’re going to something less interesting now, buckle up.” I’ve seen it a couple of times now, so I know to expect it, but I was crestfallen on first watch that Gondo becomes a background character in the second half.

But an actual barn is a lot cooler.
I have Battlefield Earth as one of the worst movies made. I also have Pulp Fiction as one of the best movies made.
But I want to submit Christopher Lloyd for Back to the Future and Foodfight for WOAT and GOAT moments
unfortunately have to side with the “meh” on Weapons. Never hated it and there were a few moments that I liked but overall was mostly just waiting for it to end.
having seen all of Ozark (+ Inventing Anna) I kinda resent and will never be able to take Julia Garner seriously, so the movie immediately started from a bad point and never recovered.
(re: Clovis previous comments, I saw it in an almost empty theater which I’m always happy about, but kinda see how this would play better with a crowd to gasp/laugh etc at some moments…)
Big step-down from Barbarian imo…cannot really be compared as a movie, but from the tone it is kind of if you removed the first third from Barbarian completely ? Still I’ll be interested to see what Cregger does next…
(unlike whoever directed that Alien 3 movie, so ugly and boring, wouldn’t bet on that guy to ever make anything worthwhile…)

Speaking of conspiracies, saw Relay last night. Really good, recommend. Do not look up anything about it before hand though imo. Brief synopsis, the dude from The Sound of Metal uses a teletype phone relay service for the deaf to help people who have stolen documents return them to the people they stole them from while insuring their safety. Intrigue and thrilling situations arise.
