The Last Duel (2021)

When Ridley Scott makes a banger, it’s an all-timer. The scenes of sexual assault are tough to watch, but they demand you pay attention to the details, because some of the differences are small (and some are gigantic), and it’s the point of the story for the audience to experience the same scene from Marguerite’s point of view compared to that of le Gris.

The final duel is gripping.

Some people complained about Affleck, but I think he and Damon were great. Adam Driver made me forget how much I don’t like him. Jodie Comer is the star of the show.

What the H? You dislike Driver too?

Yes. He makes me make this expression.

Oof, Weapons gets a big thumbs down from me, no clue what so many other people saw in it, it just felt like a mess, very inconsistent tone.

Region-specific DRM? Are there scratches or fingerprints on the discs?

Some of them are scratched. Others look fine but won’t play. Maybe it’s due to the DVD player costing $15.

Oh no

I’m a bit into Gone with the Wind. First time watching. My god, the racism is hard to stomach. Scarlett might be the biggest bitch on planet earth. And not just that. The horniest bitch. She’s insufferable and I’m just hoping I get the satisfaction of seeing her get her just desserts.

Weapons is having very big opening weekend numbers. I saw Freakier Friday instead. Recommended if you like Freaky Friday.

Back in the day when I still used the library, I had a DVD rip program which I used to copy bad DVDs and get a watchable version with only a few skips.

Adam Driver is good or great in every performance. Hell, he was the closest thing to someone making the Star Wars sequel trilogy actually work. Alas, there was simply no overcoming the creative behind The Rise of Skywalker.

I’ve definitely never seen him be bad in anything. Expecting him to win an Oscar at some point before he croaks.

I thought The Last Duel really dropped the ball on what could have been a far better movie. I saw it in theater so I might be misremembering a lot:

In the woman’s POV she is clearly sexually assaulted by Adam Driver, which makes sense. However, Adam Driver’s pov shows essentially the same scene. Clearly from his POV he did not sexually assault her, he suavely charmed her while her husband was neglecting her.

It seemed like the movie feared to enter this gray area (understandable), but in doing so removed any agency from the wife, and also chose the morality for the viewer. This made the 3 perspectives redundant.

(Didn’t realize need to use separate spoiler tags for multiple paragraphs)

Did you watch Girls? I can’t stand even looking at him because of how he was in the few episodes I saw of the show. I can barely tolerate him now, but he has never overcome that performance for me. I never eagerly seek out anything he’s in but generally won’t avoid him anymore.

Nah, didn’t see Girls. I can’t comment on that. Or on the movies that I haven’t seen, obviously. But I’ve seen enough of him to be very impressed with his body of work in film.

Girls was my first experience with him too, maybe that’s where the dislike comes from. I can only see him as a weird, stiff, dope.

Ahem. Finn and Rose were elite characters until they got nerfed.

I was unlucky enough for that to be the first thing I saw him in. Sometimes it happens that an actor’s early role can really spoil their career for me.

Angie Harmon overcame Law & Order with Rizzoli & Isles. It took me years to be convinced to watch that show.

Timothy Olyphant overcame Damages with Justified. Years to be convinced for this one too.

Ben Affleck, Liv Tyler, Ben Stiller, Maria Bello, and Adam Driver still haven’t overcome my distaste for them.

Shrug. Finn was a good character in the first one, but the nerfing happened less than halfway through the trilogy. Boyega was never in a position to carry enough of the load to matter more than Driver.

Hard disagree. I love the scene when Rose saves Finn.

The setup for Finn especially in TFA was great. And I thought TLJ built on that enough that I was eager to see his arc play out in the third movie.
