“Black coal, thin ice” is whatever, but “Wild goose lake” from the same director is great imo, pure highly stylized bad vibes
I love “Ash is purest white” (as all of Jia Zhangke) but even if it has some crime it’s clearly not a thriller

I wanted to like this but I just didn’t feel it. Law’s OK but there are some scenes that are inexplicable, like a scene where the Law and his junior are telling the local law enforcement about the Turner Diaries and a local sheriff pipes up that he’s seen the book before. A quick cut and Law’s screaming and berating the poor guy while he’s getting the case file about why didn’t he mention it earlier, and I’m like you just told him about the book. It was the scene right before this one. I know that scene and a few other ones are supposed to show that the case is getting under the skin of the detectives, but none of the scenes feel earned.
Hoult is fine as the ringleader. He kind of plays him more subued than he could have, which is good because he’s not very complex in the movie.
There is one well shot scene where Law and his junior are chasing Hoult down a road and there’s a couple of shots of Hoult shooting over over shoulder. Then you get this long shot of the Law and his junior running while you hear bullets whizz by them and while the camera is still focused on law running you see, all while still unfocused, the juniors shirt turn red, he stops slows down and stops running and collapses all while the camera is still focused on Law running
Also the movie looks like a tourism promo for Northern Idaho. It’s beautiful.

Companion is now on Max. It won’t change your life, it’s merely pretty good, but I recommend it if you haven’t seen it. Probably the third-best 2025 movie I’ve seen this year after 1. Sinners and 2. Black Bag.
