Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 2)

The only thing I remember about this movie is I think his family was dancing around singing his name at some point.

The first movie I was an extra in was Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius about the famous golfer. It was ok, but it has same problem: there’s no real conflict. Bobby Jones is nice (though he has a bit of a temper on the course, which I guess is a minor conflict), he wins a lot, then he has a nerve disease and retires.

I needed at least this much. This movie doesn’t even do that. At one point his wife tricks a beat reporter into thinking that they’re going to go bust him cheating on her, and then she reveals to him, “Haha, actually he’s just staying out late tonight because he’s volunteering as a little league umpire.” The only attempt to introduce tension is to tease, “Maybe he’s not perfect?” followed by a reveal of “never mind, yes he is.”

Top Secret! (1984)

watched to honor the life of val kilmer since it’s his earliest acting credit on imdb. unbelievable that this is his first thing, he’s so poised, he absolutely nails it. it’s a laugh-a-minute farce about spies fighting nazis in ww2 and i laughed a lot, it really worked for me.

5 bags of popcorn am i being too nice? no, i loved this movie

Hundreds of Beavers (2022)

A well-reviewed comedy my gf and I saw a trailer as we were watching a different movie.

Gonna be honest. It kinda sucked. I guess I chuckled a few times but after 30 minutes we both gave up. Just seemed like it was going nowhere.

Speaking of that other movie

Charade (1963) was a spy comedy film starring Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Walter Matthau, and George Kennedy. It didn’t break any ground but was actually quite funny and clearly had some star power to work with. It wasn’t anything revolutionary. Just a fun, fairly predictable spy comedy.

Are you generally a Loony Tunes fan?

I mean I was when I was a kid. And I could see the obvious influences.

How about spoofs? Naked gun, Hot Shots and the like? Or The Stooges. Do you still enjoy them currently or did you enjoy them as a kid only?

I get why someone wouldnt like Hundreds of Beavers, but I still enjoy Bugs Bunny shit from time to time so it connected with me pretty hard. Its obviously not a prerequisite, but im not going to have my wife watch it thinking she would enjoy it.

She was the one who recommended that we watch it, not me.

Anyway, I chuckled a few times in 30 minutes but it didn’t seem like it was going anywhere. So we agreed to stop watching it. Kind of a bummer.

Well, that trailer should trigger a lot of boomers…

It looks like one of the best war movies in ages, I’m told they used period-accurate weapons and tanks. If any of you guys find out how to stream it in the US, let me know.

Knew nothing about Anora other than that it won Best Picture. So I fired it up while the flight was boarding. Hoo boy.

Lol

I’ve come to the conclusion that generally war films, with few exceptions, are immoral. I don’t really love any of them.

Sick burn if you know, ignore the content of my post entirely. :+1:

Went for a rewatch last night, and I regret to inform you that The Saint is not, in fact, very good. Some things are better left enjoyed in your memories.

Ya agree. I don’t think it’s great either.

I watched Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang on Friday. Hadn’t seen it in 20 years, so I had pretty much forgotten the plot. Pretty enjoyable, although some of the “humor” hasn’t aged well.
