A women decides to come out as a lesbisn in her 30s
I thought the movie was a small cozy movie. Didnāt make a lot of waves but still well done. It has the trappings of a romantic company movie but its really about female friendship.
Dakota Johnson does neurotic very well. Thereās one scene where her straight friend just impulsively kisses a girl and they have a fight because, in reality, Dakota is too neurotic to be spontaneous and you can feel her neurosis and self disappointment radiating throughout the scene.

Inglourious Basterds (2009)
I last saw this when it was new, and I mentally slotted it away as āgood time, enjoyed watching, itās middle-of-the-pack Tarantino,ā then largely forgot about it and havenāt much pull to run it back since. Upon finally deciding to: WTF was my previous positive reaction so muted for? This movie is fucking awesome. So much good tension-building, incredibly well-crafted throughout, great subtle bits of foreshadowing that donāt seem like anything and then pay off later.
Iām still at 1. Pulp Fiction, but this movie honestly might have just leapfrogged every other QT for me, and itās no small thing to possibly put it above Reservoir Dogs and Jackie Brown.

Picked up the blu-ray from the library. It looks like it will come to Paramount+ on 3/1 though.

Pittās performance in that movie is pretty great, if not profound in any way.

Does Dances with Wolves still hold up? Yes it does. Whether itās the standard or extended cut, this epic Western makes you see the grandeur of the frontier, a First Nation people, and the spectacle that only Kevin Costner could offer.
It makes me kind of sad that his latest epic is not good. Like imagine if he kept pumping out epics with a script this good. Instead we got Waterworld, The Postman, and now Horizon. And I like Waterworld, but damn does it have its problems.

Agree. It has obvious white saviour issues but I still think itās a great film. As someone who spent years studying bison hunting this is still the only film that gets it right.

The Brutalist (2024).
I canāt really articulate it at this point because I just walked out but this film is an actual masterpiece. It is why film is an art form. Itās a huge fuck you to the marvelification of movies. Itās incredibly deep, complex and layered. Itās why I love films.

Just saw this as well, and while Iām not going as far as A+, I do agree that this is quite an impressive film. A 3+ hour movie that keeps me engaged the entire time is not an easy feat. Acting and sound were top notch, as was the cinematography and production design.
Looked at the Wikipedia page and the budget for this was under $10 million? Thatās seriously mindblowing.

I really think Adrien Brody gave not only the best performance of this year in that movie, but probably has the best male performance of any nominated performance for several years. Would likely have to go back to Anthony Hopkins in The Father to find one as impressive to me.

I have so many thoughts on this movie. As EB said above the fact that this cost $10 is mind blowing. I hate to be that guy but a movie like this at that budget makes me loathe superhero movies even more.
Along with Brody, if this doesnāt win best score just lol Oscars. The fact that itās nominated with Wicked is hilarious.
The last scene before the epilogue when the flashlights are moving across the building instantly took me back to the train robbery in the Assassination of Jesse James which I consider the most beautiful sequence of film ever caught.
I agree, though only because Challengers was snubbed for a nomination. I think that clearly should have been in the mix for score too.

Challengers is my second favorite film last year after this one. Iād rank the score 1 and 2 as well.

I canāt think of a movie where the final scene completely recontexualized everything that came before but isnāt a twist. I started weeping like a kid when she explained the connection between the structure and the camps.
This movie also reminded me so much of Zone of Interest in that every single frame is about the Holocaust without ever mentioning it.
Itās a shame the main people involved in making the movie have basically made zero from it. And it will take a long time to get to the point where there wonāt be a struggle financially for them because itās not like the next movie will be big budget and gobs of cash will be thrown at them.
Iām rooting for it due to a personal connection but sort of hate the precedent that a movie can be a big deal on a $10m budget, especially at that length. It wonāt propel him to big budget movies. It will propel him to everyone wanting that quality on a shoestring budget aka the Frank Darabont syndrome. Itās why you try to avoid showing off on a low budget. This is one Iāll definitely watch when it comes to streaming because Iāve heard lots of good things about it controversy aside.
