Romulus is AWESOME. on HULU now
Prometheus is fine except for the dumbass who wanted to play with a space snake.
Caddo Lake (2024)
One of those you want to know as little as possible about. I was put onto it by the filmcast. Itās a pretty great little twisty film worth the ride.
Grade: B+

Evil Does Not Exist (2024)
Ryusuke Hamaguchi got a lot of acclaim for 2021ās Drive My Car; I liked it but didnāt love it. I actually got more out of this follow-up work from him. Absolutely stunning visually; if nothing else, itās got my vote for nicest movie to look at of all 2024 releases Iāve seen. And on the merits, itās way up there as well, probably settling in somewhere in my top five films of the year so far.
Hamaguchi really sets a mood; itās not a small thing that he can make a simple community meeting with representatives of a corporation be one of the most compelling scenes Iāve seen in a bit, or that he can get me to sit back and really enjoy a scene that consists of watching dudes chop wood for several minutes. The ending of the movie isā¦something. Probably divisive. I think it works for me, but Iām still digesting it a day later.
Japan didnāt submit this as their hopeful nominee for Best International Feature, so I guess itās probably not getting awards love come Oscar time. I only hope that means the film they did submit (named Cloud; not available stateside yet) is excellent, because thatās what it would take for that to be the right choice on the merits.
4/5 (only streaming option is the Criterion Channel right now)
I felt pretty much exactly the same about this one (loved it with no reservations for most of the runtime, not quite sure what to think about the ending but now that time has passed i think Iām in favor of it).
Also fwiw Iāve seen Hamaguchiās last 5 movies and Drive my car was the only one I didnāt love (still liked it, but not sure why itās the one that got the more love from mainstream awards etc), so you might enjoy the rest of them tooā¦
Yeah, I went through and watchlisted all of his next most popular ones right after watching this. Definitely planning to get to those now too.
Itās a bit difficult to believe that they do things like having him do a close-up face where he exhibits terror, or for another example wields a butcher knife while screaming āREDRUM,ā and he wasnāt somehow always going to be clued in.
Maybe he just didnāt understand what the word drama meant
I, Tonya was incredibly good. We had not seen it before last night. Allison Janney won all the awards that year and when you watch youāll see why. It also established Margot Robbie as a seri
What is a seri?
An unfinished serious actor
For all the chatter that I didnāt really agree with that Robbie got snubbed by not being nominated for Barbie last year, Robbie damn well should have won outright for I, Tonya IMO. That, to me, is the time that she was snubbed. (Frances McDormand won for Three Billboards.)
Martin: āI do NOT play with my balls that much. ⦠You know what would make me happy?ā
Candy: āA couple more balls and an extra set of fingers?ā
Movie is still amazing. Somehow Iād forgotten that line.
Larry Bird doesnāt do as much ball-handling in one night as you do in an hour!
āYOUāRE GOING THE WRONG WAY!ā
The emotional expression, the little twist of his hat as he sees Martin reunite with his wifeā¦Candy was so fucking good.
I still donāt really get why the movie industry has simply ceded a major holiday to one movie without even attempting to compete for space in the Thanksgiving movie subgenre, but Iām glad that it holds up so beautifully.
Right? The closest next in kin is that episode of The Bear. And thatās too anxiety producing despite its consistent humor.
