Did this one a few nights ago. Yearly tradition. Wrapping up F13 “trilogy” with Part IV today and will do original 1978 Halloween tonight, as one does.
Watched a lot of the new 'Salem’s Lot. Was not impressed. But then I also need something very special for me to like a vampire movie.
I watched this one on Tuesday and yeah it was not good. I had also just read the book for the first time so everything that was cut or changed really stood out and most of the time I was like yeah this was better in the book.
According to Reddit the Mike Flannigan show Midnight Mass is a good Salems Lot adjacent show (small town, vampires etc). I watched the first few episodes and was bored to death, didn’t continue.
Its not great unfortunately. We need more of Flannagans stuff to come out to continue the Kingasaance.
Dang I’m sad to hear that. I was a big fan of Midnight Mass.
No joke. The Life of Chuck has a great cast. Hoping for something great.
It has crushed at every festival its played at so far. Im really excited for it
Anora (2024)
I really wasn’t sure what to expect out of this. I have negligently failed to watch Sean Baker’s other pictures so far, so really all I knew was that it was an extremely buzzy festival favorite that featured a sex worker. The mood-setting sequence took long enough that I began to wonder when an actual movie was going to start, but I reminded myself that this had a 2:20 runtime and that I should expect a slow burn. In hindsight, the initial sequences of the movie are absolutely invaluable to the final product. By the way, a pretty irrelevant side note: I’m sad to say that I’ve reached the age that the absolute blowout parties on display just made me take a deep breath and think, “That…just looks exhausting.” But I took them in the more upbeat spirit they were intended.
Once the plot gets cooking, it was impossible not to be engaged. And where I went in fully expecting a straight drama the whole way, this movie actually offered some of the best laugh-out-loud hilarity of the whole year. Unexpectedly broad comedy that absolutely worked. And it was the perfect amount. It is generally a serious movie, but I was also quite glad to laugh.
Anyway, I’ve typed too much already and I’ve buried the lede: Mikey Madison is a force of nature. It appears that I’ve seen her turn up in a couple of other small roles, but for all intents and purposes this was my first exposure to her, and this was just an absolute explosion of a breakout performance. At this point, I do not see a better performance turning up in the Best Actress race, though I’d be pleasantly surprised to see anything else turn up that could make me second-guess that stance. Spectacular outing for her. Truly blown away by all she brought to the table here.
I’ll say that the extended middle sequence of the film could have been shorter. I went from really enjoying that part to thinking, “Uhh, so we’re still doing this? Can we get onto the next part?” Not great. But that’s the only blemish I really place on this movie, so I don’t want to overstate it either.
Without getting into it too deeply, I also just want to take a moment to tip my cap to an excellent ending that will stick with me. Some movies fail to stick the landing, but this one is not among them. I am currently working my way through an internal debate over whether it’s my new #1 of the year. It naturally doesn’t lend itself to easy comparison to a wildly different type of movie in Dune 2. Very highly recommended in any case.
4.5/5
Streaming somewhere?
No, it’s just reaching theaters now. This was first night available here, and it seems to be reaching different cities at different times. Looks like Seattle has it too though.
You’ll be waiting a bit for streaming options.
K, might try to go see it on a Tuesday in the next couple weeks. Thanks for the rec
Housemate has MAX so I finally checked this out. I give it a 3/5. I liked it.
Booo, I watched boy kills world, it sucked, the main character doesn’t talk but has voice over done by the bob’s burgers dude
Going to see it tomorrow
Ohhhhhh sh
Housemate also has D+. About to launch into all Marvel all the time. Starting with The Winter Soldier, which is a great espionage movie that just happens to have Captain America.
Damn was that weird having his voice? I can’t help but hear him as Bob in anything else.
Yea it ruins it, not that it would be good anyways
The Substance (2024)
As a guy who enjoys sour candy and the films of david cronenberg, this movie is right up my alley. A lot of very disturbing and upsetting pictures and sounds put together so beautifully, the whole time I’m watching it I’m like
There’s so much in this. You got a portrait of cindarella grey allegory, you got a social critique of women in the entertainment business, of ageing in society, modern work-life balance, of capitalism! Of the tragic inhumanity of people who have it all and take from those who have nothing.
Demi Moore gives the best performance of her career. There are so many closeups of Margaret Qualley’s ass in a thong it adds another meta level of scary because i start thinking, “did i direct this movie? for myself? in another dimension? can a movie in real life actually have everything i want and more?” (No; of course not; maybe; and YES)
An absolute all-timer! 5 bags of popcorn and 12 sodas
