Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 2)

Dont let that scene fool you. Its not a comedy and is pretty fucked.

Everyone is moving/bouncing so much when delivering their dialogue. And Gordon-Levitt sure made a choice, didnā€™t he.

I havenā€™t seen Havoc but I knew Anne Hathaway and Bijou Phillips were in it. No idea the other two guys were there as well.

Unrelated except itā€™s another ā€œwtf is this shitā€ excerpt, highly recommend pressing play on it. (And if someone here actually saw this movie, highly curious on their impressionsā€¦)

Say what you will about Ed Wood, his sexual politics were rad as hell.

Not an intentional comedy

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Back when I was a young pup, I remember my many visits to the local mom and pop video store in town. I rented all sorts of videotapes from there, but it will surprise nobody that one of my regular stops in the store was the back corner that had a couple of rows of WWF wrestling tapes. Right next to that was the horror section, and while I was too young to get permission to rent any of those tapes, I definitely stopped off to look at the boxes, and I remember this being the most iconic tape on offer in that section. I was intrigued, but by the time I got into high school and was allowed to watch R-rated stuff, I had pretty much forgotten that intrigue; accordingly, this movie fell by the wayside in my mind as a relic of the time. Still, I did periodically think that I should get around to it.

I liked the way this one set up, I liked some of the dynamics among the young characters that I recognized the Wes Craven signature on through the original Scream trilogy, and the initial kill in the movie is a really good scene. And shortly after that, I really felt like this movie lost its way.

Heather Langenkamp was not very good in the lead. The story builds up a sci-fi/supernatural mystery of sorts, and I sort of trusted that it was headed for a decent payoff, but that trust was misplaced. The final act was mostly rough, and the ultimate ā€œsolutionā€ for the movieā€™s plot was quite stupid.

There are scattered good moments throughout - basically each of the first three kills are highlights - but overall Iā€™m surprised this thing landed as well as it did for general audiences back in the mid-80s.

Fair.

I will say though that this has some of the best sequels (okay and some of the worst). Parts 3 and 4 should be seen on their own regardless of how part 1 landed for you. Iā€™d also highly suggest New Nightmare, which can be seen on its own but will benefit from you having seen the original.

These guys convinced me I do not want to see Joker 2. It sounds terrible. They really got me by explaining that the musical numbers grind the movie to a halt where youā€™re like lol okay I guess Iā€™m waiting five minutes again for the movie to continue. And that Lady Gagaā€™s direction was to mute her talent and sing terribly.

Yeahā€¦maybe next October.

Agree with you on Part 3. Part 2 however is surprisingly dark and my favorite ANOES sequel. The lead is a gay man playing it straight. I feel like he was in a documentary about his experience. Thereā€™s also an abusive gym teacher who is discovered by the protagonist in a gay night club and then inexplicably takes him back to the school and makes him shower?? Idk, I feel like the movie was trying to say something or deal with issues that were taboo. Anyway, it took some chances and Iā€™ve grown to appreciate it alot.

Iā€™m not trying to be antagonistic, but can you list some horror movies from the 70s or 80s that you would conisder very good?

Fair enough. Iā€™m with you itā€™s a great sequel. Just thinking of what is most likely to please LKJ.

That aspect of part 2 got some great discussion in the documentary Never Asleep Again.

Man, I never would have taken it that way unless you specifically opened up the post with this. Anyway:

The Shining is a perfect five-star gem. Ditto for Jaws. Ditto for Alien. Ditto for The Thing. Halloween is excellent. So is Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Posted a few days ago about Poltergeist, thought it was great. Same for The Fly. Aliens is great also.

Adam Scott was in Madame Web?? And not the golfer?

Fair, canā€™t argue with that list.

Oh boy, take a guess at which character he plays.

Isnt part 2 considered one of the best queer movies ever?

Wasnā€™t aware but Iā€™d buy it

Iā€™m going to go with a very, very bad rip off of his role on The Good Place
