Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

Where would one watch Parasite if one was so inclined to watch it?

Hot Take: Parasite, while good, is currently at peak over-hype and will be largely forgotten in a month or two.

I think the reason the opening for The Dark Knight Rises never wows me the same way as the opening for The Dark Knight is that in TDKR, you canā€™t see anything. Yeah theyā€™re way up in the air doing all sorts of cool stuff FOR REALZ, but itā€™s not on the screen. We just know itā€™s happening.

We get occasional establishing shots, and those are impressive, but if we donā€™t feel that awe once weā€™re back in the plane, those establishing shots do nothing. Well, thatā€™s not true. They do something, but itā€™s the same thing every other movie does. I consider the opening scene to The Dark Knight to be among the finest heist scenes ever filmed. Iā€™d watch it on its own and would have been equally happy if it had kept going as Chris Nolanā€™s version of Heat.

I canā€™t say the same for TDKR. That scene plays okay but can easily be skipped and nothing to miss for it.

Its obviously at peak, but its had buzz for quite a while. Probably the most of any ā€œcriticsā€ movie since la la land.

The first foreign language movie to win an Oscar is not getting forgotten anytime soon. This is going to open doors, make people take a chance with subtitled films that they might not otherwise have watched. I know from experience in the Midwest that subtitled foreign films are different and people avoid them. Thereā€™s going to be a little less of that now. Itā€™s normal now to go off to a theater in Bumblefuck, Ohio and watch the latest buzzy film from Korea or wherever because people are saying it might get an Oscar.

Yeah, this is an absolutely massive achievement.

(Though it should have been at least the third non-English BP winner.)

Crouching Tiger was robbed. I will die on that hill. Saw it three times when it was in theaters, fucking outstanding on every level. Even the soundtrack is amazing.

What other movies were happening in 2001? OKā€¦ uhhhhā€¦ Gladiator. Yeah, that was a beast of a movie, though. Crouching Tiger was obviously better but thereā€™s no shame in losing to an epic Ridley Scott action film. I gotta rewatch Crouching Tiger this weekend.

Thatā€™s the first one I was talking about. Roma was the other. (There may be others that I donā€™t know about)

Gladiator was fine, but Crouching Tiger was so groundbreaking. And Green Book winning last year was just absurd.

Parasite is available to rent. Itā€™s $6 on VUDU. Itā€™s $15 to buy digitally.

EDIT: Itā€™s only $4 to rent on Amazon.

Ship four marks to the people who made this movie, they deserve it.

Thereā€™s also the thing with this scene where itā€™s so fucking dumb that otherwise reserved persons may bust out caps lock to deal with it. So they go through all the trouble of pulling off a mid-air corpse/blood type switcheroo, so much so that one of the acolytes has to stay behind and die because the crash investigators will expect one of them in the wreckageā€¦

EXCEPT THE WINGS AND THE TAIL OF THE PLANE ARE WHO KNOWS HOW FAR FROM WHERE YOU CRASHED THE FUSELAGE, LOL, SUSPICIOUS MUCH?

YOUR PARATROOPERS ALSO FIRED INTO THE PLANE/WINDOWS FROM THE OUTSIDE, LIKE A CRASH INVESTIGATION WONā€™T FIND THAT OUT, JFC.

Is the idea that the people investigating the crash will figure out that this was some ridiculous second plane mid-air heist, but then they will conclude that all the other shit in the wreckage is on the level?

Iā€™m declaring that Tenet is going to be trash. Nolan peaked with The Prestige and heā€™s only good for period pieces now.

Even more reason to skip that scene!

My theory is that his brother Jonathan is the genius storyteller, whereas Nolan is the genius director. Together, they are unstoppable. Separate, varying quality, but my crown goes to Jonathan if judging on their full resumes.

Having said that, I thought Interstellar was great but not GREAT like The Prestige, and Iā€™m looking forward to Tenet. Trailer looks awesome, and I will show up for anything starring John David Washington.

Interstellar was alright in parts but it gets a Commodus-thumbs-down.gif from me. Way, way too much level 0 I miss my daughter mush throughout the whole story. It never achieved any sense of adventure; it was as empty as Gravity with a more vapid lead. Even in a tesseract MM canā€™t manage to have more than one emotional dimension. Ya burnt!

I just watched Green Book for the first time tonight.

Perfectly cromulent movie. Lol at it being a best picture of any year. Story was great but there was absolutely nothing interesting done with the directing, cinematography, or editing. It was pretty pedestrian overall.

also the score hurt my ears.

You thought Gravity was empty? Wtf? Thatā€™s reverse stepbrother gif

Blasphemy. The score from Interstellar is one of the best of the last decade.

Was a great audio and visual experience in 2D IMAX. Even if the plot lacks a little. Excellent film.

I didnā€™t mind it, it just had no story, it was like a demo for the capabilities of a new graphics card.

Wow. That movie makes me feel so many things. Did you also shrug when we lost all of those innocent contractors when Luke blew up the Death Star?
