Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

I thought Wakanda Forever was really good. You’ll probably enjoy it if you like Marvel movies. My wife even liked it, and she isn’t really a fan a genre.

This was weird for me. The opening was amazing with a ten minute long continuous action shot that set up the story and completely sucked me in. And for the next hour it was incredible film making with the long takes weaving through the chaos making me feel viscerally part of it. Then the final third has a (maybe?) mentally disabled flower guy suddenly become a psychotic yet preternaturally competent IED expert who can quickly find enough propane canisters casually lying around an apartment building to blow it up, and… huh? Where the hell did that come from? lolwtf ex machina

I’m enjoying this almost as much as the movie.

Saw TILL tonight. That was fun.

Don‘t bother with „Peninsula“, the sequel to Train to Busan.

It’s nothing like the first movie. While it has a few moments it‘s mostly bad CGI, impossible physics and a non-sensical plot. Worst of all they managed to make the zombies not scary. No matter how many there are they can always be shot, run over, defeated in hand-to-hand combat and will always stop bothering the main characters if they want to take a couple of minutes for a heart-felt moment in the middle of an action scene.

The Menu (2022)

If the speech from The Pig became a whole movie.

Loved it.

She said (2022)

True story of the NYT story about Harvey Weinstein.

I had read both books so knew the main plot points but it’s still a really well done journalism story in the vein of All the Presidents Men.

Really worth seeing and an important story.

Does it have hot broads in it?

Has anyone seen this? It looks like The Matrix had an orgy with Mark Hamill and Eminem and David Lynch’s Dune, what a glorious piece of mid-90’s pop culture trash. Except it was made way back in 1989? Seems far ahead of its time, I must seek this movie out.

Also I guess it was directed by the guy who made Tron? Woah.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is good. Certainly worth seeing if you like the MCU. New villain is pretty interesting and Angela Bassett steals every scene she’s in.

My brother hadn’t seen any Marvel movies, but came along because he’s visiting and my family wanted to see it. He really enjoyed it. He said that he never quite got why Black Panther was such a big deal, since he hadn’t seen it, but after seeing this, he 100% understands.

Plus, when this 46-year-old white guy wants to be a bald, black, female warrior after seeing these movies, I can only imagine what little kids feel.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022)

No idea how he did it again but this is just as fun as the first one. Stellar cast. Great whodunnit. Fun cameos. Surprising twists.

Soooooooooooooo fun!

Possessor (2020)

Are you a huge David Cronenberg fan? Are you curious about what his son has been up to? If you’re like me, the answer to those questions is “uh… no, dog.” Regardless, I thought this was pretty great if you like psychedelic sci-fi. It’s very much like the visual style of Panos Cosmatos, who is one of my faves. An assassin takes over people’s minds to do her murdering. Things get weird and gross. It’s worth a watch if you’re into that kind of thing.

So… how was you guys’ Thanksgiving? Anyone do anything besides the Season 5 rewatch, where it’s revealed that actually I’m wrong, and Walt was coerced by fascists? Crazy. It actually was really mind-blowing. And that scene with Jesse in the garden in Episode 12–just fantastic re-smurfing from Aaron Paul. What I liked most of all was how edifying it all was about U.S. railway infrastructure and how the old time-y ways never really change. I’m General Celes. Yes.

Coulda beena contenda

He stole every scene he was in as Smee.

Amazing.

My fave superhero or just character from the MCU is Darryl (the actor is the producer for Bluey).

There is a somewhat less elegant version of “AirBnB” gone wrong on Netflix called The Rental. It’s directed by Dave Franco! His directorial debut.

Not sure if this was peak Hamill or the continuing ascent but you gotta follow that up with his 1991 special Guyver

While he would soon star as the voice of the character who became almost as iconic as his other one, it would be another ten years before the role that brought the name Skywalker back to popular acclaim.

Can we talk about Mark Hamill as The Trickster? My man is not only the best Joker of all time, he has also been the best Joker knockoff.

So, The Menu is apparently just a movie that shows pro-cannabalism Nazi propaganda while it makes death threats and, quite literally, points loaded guns at audience members. In all seriousness, with no irony, do not go to this movie.
