So, based on this my wife and I watched “Hereditary” tonight. It was… something. One of the more disturbing movies I’ve ever seen. Made me as uncomfortable as I was while watching “Uncut Gems”, but in a different way. I’ll give it 4 tongue clicks out of 5, but I won’t be watching it again. Like, ever.
OMGGGG One Cut of the Dead is amazing. Micro-budget comedy/horror from Japan. Absolutely do not look up anything about this movie beforehand, just be prepared to have fun, it’s a bop.
If you want a more conventional Halloween-time gothic horror haunted house movie, Satan’s Slaves is a 2017 Indonesian movie that hits the spot. The title isn’t really great in translation but w/e, it’s good and spooky.
Made a list of some stuff to watch from that top 100 comedies of the 2000s that was posted the other week.
First up was Sorry to Bother You and it gets a wat from me. The horse people stuff at the end was kind of funny but the rest of the movie wasn’t really doing much for me. Not a great start for the list.
This was like UPs favorite movie in 2018, shocked anyone from here never got around to it.
Rare to see an anti capitalist movie obviously.
I probably saw it talked about on here but the name didn’t sound familiar and I knew nothing about it going in.
I tried to watch this movie way back in the day mainly because of Johnny Truant’s avatar (RIP), and I couldn’t finish it. So I totally agree with a “wat” rating.
I’m currently watching Pineapple Express and am having a similar reaction - do people actually think this is a funny movie?
My wife will no longer watch Horror with me due to Hereditary lol.
Made it 1/2 way through Bros. Its fine, laughed at a few things, but super rom com formula that I’m just not into. Eichner was relatively non Eichner which at his age is a good sign. IDK.
Does Get Out count? If so, I think it’s strong enough to be in consideration sometime in the next decade or two.
It’s great, but we have already seen it as our Halloween movie.
Looks like you’ve got a loophole there for more than one per year.
My wife chose Rosemary’s Baby as this year’s annual horror watch. I was hoping she’d go with Halloween or the Fly, but I’ll take it.
I didn’t like this as much as I hoped (except for the first 5 mins or so). It’s consistently well done, but is missing something that would make it great and didn’t really click for me. Still, watching an African genre movie is a nice change of pace, and I would never have if not for your rec, so thanks.
My horror rec for everyone here is Malignant, although its strength is that it does not stay in one lane (also transcends distinctions between “good movies” and “bad movies” to land somewhere between “so bad it’s good” and “actual masterpiece”). It’s done by James Wan if that means anything to you (haven’t seen much by him before, maybe i should).
Sadly I don’t watch as much horror as I would want, as my gf is at a strict “0/year” policy (but this thread might inspire me to try to negotiate it to 1/year !).
Another (not horror) recommendation is Dragged across concrete. This stars Mel Gibson and Vince Vaughn as two racist (but they have black friends) cops who get suspended (cancel culture) and decide to try to rob some drug dealers. This is a very violent and very very dark movie, and is very effective at depicting its worldview (which is that the world in general and american cities in particular are borderline unlivable, hellish places), through an expertly well done slow pacing (runtime is 2h40min). (Small disclaimer that the politics of the movie are probably problematic, but it didn’t bother me too much).
Now that you have a Shudder trial you simply must see One Cut of the Dead.
Also recommedn “Scare Me” for an awesome bit of acting, sound design, and shadow work. Its in my regular Halloween rotation now along woth Trick R Treat.
If you have never seen Saw by James Wan, go do it man.
I like goofy Halloween stuff but I’m not into torture porny stuff plus I think I already know the twist ending, so I’ve avoided it. Everyone should see One Cut of the Dead, I can’t believe I’m only discovering about it. now. It’s more of a comedy than a spooky Halloween movie, tho. It’s very hard to actually describe what kind of movie it even is without ruining the surprise.
The original Saw is wrongly labelled torture porn, in both my and many others opinion. The sequels 100% are, but the original is much more on a suspense/horror level akin to Se7en, than torture porn like Hostle.
What we really need to shake up the horror genre is a new brand of horror for the 2020s. I propose films where protagonists are forced to sit through Zoom meetings they don’t have to be in, while other participants repeatedly try to speak while on mute.
