Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

A Most Violent Year

7/10

A movie about a small time heating oil business man trying to make the deal of the lifetime while not getting sucked into the seedy gangster underbelly of the business in 1980’s New Jersey. The promo hyped this as a gangster movie, but the movie is about a guy avoiding becoming a gangster, so if that’s what you are expecting then nothing happens in this movie.

I thought it was well acted by both Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain and appreciated it at that level, but if you’re looking for something more than this isn’t it

Last Night in Soho

7/10

An Edgar Wright movie about a young woman who, in her dreams, relives the life of a woman in 1960’s London. The camera work on this is great. There are some truly amazing shots using mirrors, reflections, etc that are very creative. The story isn’t so bad, but not great, until the third act where it attempts a twist on what you’re expecting but doesn’t stick the landing at all.

I didn’t like this one on release but I liked it much better on a recent rewatch (I’ve never seen the TV show fwiw). One thing for sure is that no other movie looks like this, it’s pretty incredible that Mann managed to turn this big budget movie into an experiment with digital cameras.

I rewatched Casino Royale, Spectre and half of Quantum of Solace on the plane back to Australia. Can confirm. Also QoS is kind of ass. Shakycam action scenes. The other two were great.

Have also recently caught The Northman, Prey and Everything Everywhere All At Once. The Northman is a weird movie, like if 300 were good. Looks great. I liked it quite a bit. Prey is a solid good time, lot of beautiful shots in it. I found EEAAO a little bit twee but still liked it.

Man I love Woody.

I watched Midway the other day and Woody played Admiral Nimitz which I found an odd choice.

The movie could have been good but ended up just being another Pearl Harbour. I probably shouldn’t have expected anything more from Roland Emmerich. The Battle of Midway was one of the largest and most important sea battles in history. You’d think that would be enough to tell an exciting story with engaging action scenes but it didn’t work for me. Unfortunately the CGI is so bad - worse than you see in some video games - that it really pulled me out of the movie.
Overall, it’s an okay movie, not unwatchable but very skippable.

Re-re-rewatching the Killing of a Chinese Bookie, which is becoming one of my favorite neo-noir movies. If you like the look and feel of Michael Mann’s early movies, I highly recommend it.

Nope was ok, I guess? The most memorable part for me was noticing all the clever tricks they did to make the animated monkey not seem like an animated monkey, but that still pulled me out of the scene so maybe it wasn’t that clever.

Am I the only one who finds Jordan Peele’s stuff kinda boring?

Cassavetes’s movie are pretty great across the board.

I thought Us was disappointing but Get Out was a blast, deserved all the praise it’s been getting. Haven’t seen Nope.

Looks like Discovery has decided to move House Party and the new Evil Dead movie to theatrical releases instead of HBO Max. They’ve also bumped Aquaman to next Holiday season to move Shazam to March to avoid the Avatar/Black Panther showdown this Nov/Dec

Yes.

Haven’t watched any Jordan Peele movies

Get Out is a terrific film. I like Us, but I would characterize it as more ambitious and “interesting” but not as effective. I have yet to see Nope.

This is pretty much my exact feelings

Yeah I’ve seen universal praise for Get Out but never had any desire to put it on when I sit down to watch movies. Maybe it’ll happen someday.

I saw Get Out in a theater with -50% PoCs in the audience and boy, the ending scene with the cop really touched a raw nerve for a lot of people, incredible live theater experience.
