I saw Jaws when I was 12. It was the only movie my Dad took me to alone - I’m guessing Mum needed to look after my younger siblings. The scene I remember most was when Dreyfuss is inspecting the boat during the night and the head falls out. Most I’ve ever jumped in a theater.
I actually caught Jaws on TV late one night last year while I was catching up on work and realized I had only seen it in bits and pieces. Thought it held up really well. It was legit scary.
Haha well I remembered too much of all the shark attacks but had forgotten about that boat scene, so I did scream a little at that head lol
Part of what made Jaws so scary wasn’t the gore but the suspense in waiting for the shark to attack.
Spielberg has said that this was caused by the mechanical shark constantly breaking down, forcing them to rely on suspense for the chills rather than on action involving the mechanical shark.
Well yeah because Brendan Gleeson is a fucking master of his craft.
Based on my twitter/podcast follows, people seem to have sky-high expectations for Killers of the Flower Moon. That’s understandable, given it’s a Martin Scorsese movie starring:
- Leo DiCaprio
- Robert De Niro
- Jesse “Fat Todd” Plemons
- John Lithgow
However, my hot take is that I thought the book was boring and I’m convinced the movie will be, too.
The writer/director Martin McDonagh is an even bigger draw for me. This is only his 4th movie, and the first 3 were absolutely outstanding.
Oh yeah In Bruges and Three Billboards are amazing. What was the third?
I have unfortunately been bored considerably by Scorcesses most recent outings.
Seven Psychopaths. It’s only slightly inferior to his other two.
Ill check it out then
Seven Psychopaths is great, defintely worth a watch. Didn’t even realize he wrote and directed all 3 of those, that’s a hell of a start to the career.
How the fuck have I not heard of this?
Licorice Pizza is on Amazon Prime. Saw it last night on a whim, and it was a really great movie watching experience. I would recommend even if you aren’t into Paul Thomas Anderson’s other stuff. It really took me back to some of my high school romances, although I was in high school a couple decades after when this movie is set.
Did not like that movie at all. Even aside from the icky age gap, the screenplay was a completely disjointed mess.
I don’t mind the age gap except that the movie gives no hint at all why a grown ass woman got wooed by that teenage boy.
New Predator movie Prey is streaming on Hulu, might watch it today
Prey (2022)
7/10
Predator prequel. Completely adequate is how I’d describe it. Amber Midthunder does good. The scenes that highlight that this is being shot out in nature, especially the long tracking scenes are gorgeous. The Predator unfortunately is mostly CGI, until the end, which detracts from the realism of everything else. The plot is where it’s the most mundane. Once you know the set up you know the story beats all the way through.
Hangover movie or to watch if you’re mildly interested.
