Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

Did Aaron Sorkin and Quentin Tarantino ghost write Con Air? Chessmate

Wait. What? You are saying they wrote the other two? How the fuck did I not know this?

That is amazing. That has to be the most talented writing team in movie history.

Face / Off was already the seminal action movie of my childhood / teenage years. Then I played poker a few time with Nick Cassavetes in Oklahoma at a local casino and itā€™s now in pantheon status.

I have many friends who worked on Point Break. One of them still has several of the parachutes and props used in the film.

Patrick Swayze and his brother both learned to skydive and got their licenses. BSBD, Patrick, you were a real one.

BSBD = Blue Skies, Black death. What we say instead of RIP

One of the guys on The Flop House recommended Brotherhood of the Wolf so I gave it a go and oh man this movie rips. It is a French gothic horror/romance monster movie about a beast killing villagers in pre-revolutionary France. It is very horny and it has martial arts and some of the cheesiest 2000ā€™s-era CGI Iā€™ve ever seen and itā€™s also a clever whodunnit murder mystery. Also a lot of very problematic Native American mystical bullshit tropes. Basically something for everyone in this movie itā€™s great.

Also, I re-watched Carnival of Souls. Man, what a classic. This dude was like hey this abandoned entertainment pavillion sure is spooky, what if we make an entire movie based on that. And it became one of the greatest indie horror films of all time.

Watching Funny People for the first time. On Rogens first stand up he dors a hoke about Sandlers character being depressed, and makes a joke about Robin Williams coming on stage and slitting his wrists. Robin killed himself 5 years after the movie came out. My wife had a theory thia indicates that people in the industry, specifically Apatow knew he was depressed. Thoughts?

I havenā€™t seen any Paddington movie, and I donā€™t have high hopes, but the

1. Face Off. 2. Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. 3. Paddington 2 joke was done so well that itā€™s an inevitable consequence of having seen Unbearable Weight. I am at peace with the idea that P2 is actually terrible. It might actually make the joke funnier.

Paddington 1 and 2 are legit fun family films.

Re : face/off, i only learned recently that the amazing scene where Cage goes ā€œI want to take his faceā€¦offā€ several times was improvised, what a legend

Awesome. I love learning about improvised iconic scenes.

Brotherhood of the wolf starring the asian Chairman from Iron Chef as a native. Lol

Itā€™s not great in terms of Native American representation. Still a highly entertaining movie imo.

I couldnā€™t find it online but from seeing it as a teenage boy I mostly remember that it had a pretty great/funny transition where Monica Belluciā€™s breast fades into a snowy hill

And speaking of funny cuts the one below from JP2 is hilarious (apologies if itā€™s been already posted)

I donā€™t think I would recommend this to most people, but I had fun with Body Bags, a pilot for a proposed Showtime TV series that never got greenlit but instead got turned into a direct-to-DVD movie. Itā€™s a horror anthology directed by John Carpenter and based on the old Cryptkeeper horror serials with all of the cheesy campy stupid fun of those classic Tales From the Crypt shows.

Haha, yeah this movie is so rowdy. Itā€™s a monster movie that completely gaslights you into questioning if there even is a monster. And then it goes on an Agatha Christie tip. It has some incredible tits, too.

I still canā€™t get over how great Carnival of Souls is. Itā€™s like if David Lynch and Antonioni and Rod Serling all fucked and had a baby together. This one dude made the definitive arthouse horror movie for $33,000 and never made another movie after that.

+1 to body bags. Fun little movie. John Carpenter having a blast in it, too.

Random question for everyone. What are the top 10 movies in the IMDB top 250 that you havenā€™t seen?

My list:
5) 12 Angry Men
7) LOTR 3
10) The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
17) Goodfellas
18) One Flew Over the Cuckooā€™s Nest
21) Itā€™s a Wonderful Life
23) City of God
25) Life Is Beautiful
27) Interstellar
30) Back to the Future

I assume most others will go far deeper into the list.

Holy shit see 5 immediately.

I believe its the only movie on my list I consider perfect.
