Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

My man throws a goddamn leopard at a British soldier, this movie owns so hard.

Is RRR better than other Bollywood action movies (which are all batshit crazy), or is this just the first one American audiences have seen?

It’s basically crazier and has higher production values than the median.

You’re on the right track, though. If you’ve seen other Indian action films, you won’t have quite the same reaction.

Also, FWIW, this one isn’t “Bollywood” /nit

I had trouble with the pacing. It doesn’t fly by like batman or endgame.

Paul F Tompkins impressions are some of the funniest things I’ve ever seen.

Drove by that TJ’s today and was in fact impacted by the parking vortex.

I had some similar thoughts so I did a semi-deep dive into it. I think you’re assigning meaning that wasn’t actually intended (or at least not the way you think).

The character names aren’t taken from mythology. They are the literal actual names of the real life people the characters are based on. Ram is based on a dude name Rama Raju. His real life love interest was named Sita (yeah, that’s quite a coincidence, I know). Interestingly, she died and to honor her, he changed his name to Sitarama. I’m sure this dude heard more than one Ramayana joke from his irl bros.

So, the whole Ram turning into Rama thing was fairly deliberate, so I think you’re right on that part in a way.

The other character is based on a dude name Komaram Bheem (again, his actual name) who was a leader of a Gond tribe. Once you’re stuck with that name, you almost have to make the character super strong. It would be like naming a character Hercules. There is really only one way to go with that*.

I’m also pretty sure that no Hanuman allusions were intended. I think the carrying Ram was coincidental too, as in the Ramayana, the reason he is carrying them in the Ramayana is quite different. I guess it’s possible, but I think it’s a stretch.

But no matter how one interprets the various facets of this film, it was definitely a lot of fun.

*Of course there are exceptions here.

There were some other parts of the movie that seemed like parallels between Bheem and Hanuman. For example, Bheem making an antidote for Ram’s snakebite reminded me of Hanuman bringing magical herbs to heal Rama’s brother from an otherwise fatal wound. And Bheem jumping off the guard tower reminded me of Hanuman leaping across the sea. But these links are much subtler than what they do with Ram, so I could just be reading too much into things.

This is what I was wondering as well. And if there are others in the same ballpark then I must see them.

Finally got around to seeing Top Gun: Maverick. Enjoyed it immensely.

I have seen three Indian movies this month counting RRR. So I have two others to recommend

The first is Singham. It’s about the chief of police of a small town and he is named Singham. Similar to Walking Tall.

Second is Baahubali 1. (Watching 2 now) Same director as rrr. This one is more adventure where our hero is wooing maidens , rescuing captives, fighting evil kings. Takes places before guns. Lots of sword fights.

+1

I have a general aversion to them, because they’re all basically musicals to me.

Somehow in RRR most of the spontaneous singing seemed to work, much to my surprise.

If there are more RRRs out there, then I’ve been missing out.

Beavis and Butthead had some amusing situations, but 90% of it just laughing bc a word is a double entendre for sex gets old pretty fast. I suppose it was prob always that simplistic but I was hoping for a bit more.

OTOH, it was funny watching with my ESL girlfriend.

I thought the white privilege stuff was hilarious. It’s such typical Beavis & Butthead behavior, but with a modern twist.

Yah, there were a few highlights.
