Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

Crimes of the future (new Cronenberg movie with Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux and Kristen Stewart)

(for context : I used to be a huge fan of early Cronenberg (watched The Brood, Videodrome etc many times) so when this was advertised as a return to his roots, I had to go see it on opening day)

premise : in a near future, humans have started evolving new organs, and (for some reason) this is mostly used for performance art.

I feel like Cronenberg is at the stage in his career where he doesn’t need his movies to be entertaining, and it shows. There’s little effort made to have much of a plot, and instead this is mostly a pretext for Cronenberg meditating on mutating bodies, what it means to be an artist, to grow old,…This is not uninteresting but I prefer to have a little fun when watching a film, or at least have some emotional connection to the characters (which doesn’t really happen here except maybe on the very final shot).

The A listers in the cast make a good job, the supporting ones not so much. Kristen Stewart as usual I can’t decide whether she’s a genius or a complete moron, she plays it weird but it kinda works.

The marketing on this movie tried to sell it as “so gore that many ppl will walkout”. And I can confirm that some people did walk out of the theater but given when they left, it’s for sure just because they were bored.

Anyway I think if you want to see this you’re better off watching (almost) any Cronenberg film made between 75 and 86. If you’ve already seen them all you will go see this movie anyway

The Kevin Spacey comeback vehicle has arrived!

I watched that trailer thinking, “huh, despite him being a piece of shit, Spacey is a good actor, so MAYBE it will look good?”

Nope. It looks REALLY fucking bad. Has the look and feel of a straight-to-Redbox movie. Total “geezer teaser” flick.

A few possibilities. One, foreign pre-sales based on the star and the poster provide the budget of the movie and then they make it. That’s how the Bruce Willis movies got made. I don’t think that happened here, because Spacey is not a big enough star and definitely not an action star. The second possibility hinges upon the lead actress, Jet Jandreau, who is apparently German. I would bet dollars to donuts that she has money herself, or is connected to money in some way. Just checked and she is indeed listed as a producer. So, either she herself or somebody close to her has the money to make a movie in the service of furthering her career, and as part of that is willing to spend $500K or $1M on Kevin Spacey.

I think I might pass on this one. I’m not the biggest Cronenberg fan, tbqh.

Timing could be better.

Actor Kevin Spacey is to be charged with sexual assault against three men, the Crown Prosecution Service has confirmed.

Five charges are being brought against the 62-year-old after a review of Met Police evidence following complaints dating between 2005 and 2013.

Three complaints relate to sexual abuse which is alleged to have taken place in London, and one in Gloucestershire.

He also faces an additional serious sexual offence charge in London.

The serious sexual offence charge - causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent - also relates to the second alleged victim.

I feel the need, the need for speed.

Came early so I can scarf some popcorn and get my ask on by the time the crowd shoes up

8/10

Reason for rating

Just what you’d expect. In fact too exactly what you’d expect. It still got my pulse racing and hit the heart strings. I was thinking 7 but that got it up to an 8.

Didn’t hate Miles Teller like I usually do.

Jennifer Connelly. Yes please.

Couple of things double spoilered.

Summary

Only thing that surprised me: no dead good guys

Summary

Weirdest callback. OG Star Wars, expected Vader to show up but I guess the enemy pilots in their black gear were close enough

Yea 7.5 to 8 stars. Didn’t exceed my expectations but didn’t disappoint either.

If someone had the option of watching it in IMAX I’d say take it.

The flight scenes are spectacular.

Hope these people have good bodyguards. Everyone who accuses spacey of a crime seems to die mysteriously.

Is no one talking about RRR? My god, this is the best Sunday morning action movie I’ve seen since Fury Road. Skip the next dumb Marvel movie and watch this dumb Hindi blockbuster instead, what an absolute blast.

Did I miss something with “Uncharted” or is just another generic adventure movie? I know its from a game but I didnt think it was anything special.

This was a ton of fun. Big focus on my favorite character (Louise) so bonus points there. 100% recommend for fans of the show. Slightly less highly recommended for non fans with kids in the tween-teen range.

Lots of in jokes for fans that will go over the heads of non fans. Only major complaint is that some of the bigger name guest star voices were not in the movie so their lines are a bit distracting. They were not able to get Aziz Ansari for Darryl or Bill Hader for Mickey so those two stand out like a sore thumb. Bosco has some killer scenes, and of course Kevin Kline kills it like always.

Of the main cast both Bob and Gene are strangely underrepresented. Gene has unfortunately just become kind of a joke machine the last few seasons and thatvstays the same here.

For such a fun game series they did absolutely nothing with it. Just a primarily boring generic action flick with no heart. 100% should have had Nolan North in the role of Nathan Drake.

Youre missing out. Its a fantastic family based sitcom with the most likeable family on TV.

If you have Hulu I highly recommend checking out a few episodes a night

If you’ve ever been into The Simpsons, Futurama etc you would probably like it.

Not particularly. Obviously seen the Simpson growing up in the 90s
