I think it was real. Rock seemed to know something was coming, possibly he was moving as if he was going to fake getting slipped, but then was surprised to get slapped for real.

it was definitely real. And he’s definitely not ok—hard to watch imo. Sucks when people make bad if ignorant jokes about sensitive subjects with the world watching, but you’ve gotta be an adult and if there are consequences for the slap I’m fine with that

Yeah it’s not justifiable. But the level of the assault matters. A punch is a bigger deal than a slap. A slap is a bigger deal than poking your finger in someone’s chest.
