Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

Been on a movie binge all weekend due to quarantine and I finally got around to seeing Jojo Rabbit. It’s the best movie I’ve personally seen in the past few years (with the caveat that I’ve not been keeping up with a lot of the newer stuff). The kid actors were great, especially the lead. It was nothing like what I was expecting even though it’s been out a while and I should have been spoiled by now. It was highly prescient and also deeply moving at times, you never notice how WWII has been done to death. 3.5 stars definitely watch if you’ve not seen it and would also recommend for watch party if it hasn’t been done already. Watched on HBO/HBO Max

In & Of Itself eh… its a magician show. A good one, but it’s not a uh the not the bees knees the reviews say it is. Not much payoff on the book/Mr Tomorrow gag either. Feel bad for that stage hand/uber driver who has to go stick a gold painted brick on some corner every night too. Soooo many “poignant 10 second pauses” and fake tears and yeah when you open the show with “this theater production was done 500 times” its a little hard to take seriously.

Still a worth a watch at 90 minutes if you somehow have Hulu or :pirate_flag: .

Showed the kids Poltergeist tonight. They weren’t “scared,” but they definitely liked it. Holds up well, except for maybe the face-peeling scene (though it’s still pretty gross).

Tell you what, though, the movie hit me differently as a parent. I actually got a little teary-eyed in parts.

My Neighbor Totoro

Released as a double with Grave of the Fireflies this movie is the complete opposite tone. A light, whimsical fairytale compared to Fireflies’ depressing anti-war story.

Not much of a plot really, this one seems like it was aimed for little kids. Which is funny because Totoro is equally terrifying as he is cute.

Not too many laughs in this one I’m afraid, but it’s extremely powerful and superbly acted, focussing the effects on everyone involved in a death penalty case.

My kids (3&5) love Totoro ! and they usually scare easily.

I’d love to watch more Miyazaki movies with them but I’m sure the others would terrify them.
So far we’ve been going through the Disney films which I’m not enjoying too much.

Only non animated film they’ve seen is “babe”. It was pretty good, but having pork for lunch just before was a bad mistake (I’m not sure they made the connection but I felt awkwardly guilty the whole time).

Dammit. Came to find out about this movie because I’ve been wanting to see it and I’m seeing bad reviews left and right. One person whose opinion I trust didn’t even make it to the end. This sucks. Three Oscar winners and it’s this shit? FML. I’m gonna watch but jfc how did they get those three to sign on if the script is that bad?

Maybe they didn’t finish reading the script? The movie is fine up to a certain point, and then it falls off a cliff. When you get to the part where you ask, “Wait, why the hell would this character do that? It makes no sense!”, just stop right there and go do something else with your time, because it gets so much worse after that.

Finally got around to seeing The Hurt Locker after all these many years. I’ve always suspected they were trolling me and Jim Cameron when they gave BP to this film and not to Avatar. Now I’m certain of it. It was a fine anti-war movie and I don’t regret watching it at all, but it was not better than Avatar and you’re wrong if you disagree. (In fact it wasn’t better than Inglorious Basterds or A Serious Man either, which it also beat out that year)

IDK if The Hurt Locker deserved Best Picture, but Kathryn Bigelow absolutely deserved to win Best Director. She won the BAFTA for Best Director that year too :+1:

I always remember The Hurt Locker as it was the first time I experienced my long held dream of having a whole cinema screen to myself.

I remember it being a decent film too, but that’s secondary.

If nothing else they certainly should have given Avatar the Special Achievement Academy Award

TIL there’s Avatar stans

I remember that The Hurt Locker was decent but I pretty much can’t remember what happens in the movie except for the opening scene. So for me if it’s not memorable enough to remember the plot it’s probably not a good best picture choice.

Correct. How many times you have rewatched it is also a good gauge.

My now 6 year has always had a high tolerance and sometimes just needs parent squeezes on stuff for comfort (she love Star wars and Marvel) so not the best comparison, however Kiki’s Delivery Service should be totally safe and I’d bet they love it.

Sorcerer (Friedkin 1977)

Turns out the only thing better than trucks driven fast (Mad Max) is trucks driven slowly. Basically a perfect adventure movie, highly recommend.

“The Mask” is a very great early Carrey work. He cannot possibly overact in this role, the mask character is so over the top and it just works. And it was played to perfection.

P-A-R-T- Y? Because I GOTTA!

Always forget about this movie. It’s one of his best films.

In honor of Christopher Plummer, I revisited Star Trek : Undiscovered Country, featuring everyone’s favorite Shakespeare quoting Klingon.
