Do you see a difference between thought provoking and profound?
I think Inception is thought provoking but not all that profound. I think though that the people you’re describing might not be making that distinction.

I don’t know, I thought the characters in Parasite were fun and I cared about them. Lead actor was understated but not terrible.
Inception was fun and had an extremely fresh premise for a sci-fi movie. Very close to being excellent but it lacked that certain something to make it truly outstanding.
Grave of the Fireflies
What kind of sick fuck would make a movie like this?
Holy fuck it’s based on the writer’s life.
I want to die.
Is that why people don’t like inception? For me the problem with it is that when you hear the premise it sounds like it should be amazing (You can go and plan heists in people’s dreams ? Wow!). But then the execution is rather unimaginative, humorless, and by the 3rd act the film has fully morphed into a bad 90s action movie.
Same goes for other Nolan movies and why they always feel like a scam to me. (E.g. tenet : the idea of an action movie where half of the characters are moving backwards in time is quite intriguing on paper ! But then it never really works…). I somehow always go see his movies because the pitch sounds amazing, but i always come out disappointed and surprised at this guy’s success.
(Sidenote: lurking this site suddenly got way less time-consuming, looks like i have to start posting to keep up my quota of time wasted here )
I guess I can’t speak for other people really, but it’s an impression I’ve got, definitely.
I understand your take on the film. I agree about it being a curiously humourless take on nonsense action movies. It’s just I love dumb action movies, so that it ‘turns’ in to one isn’t an issue for me.
I do think the initial premise is already in that universe, though. I can’t quite remember what the one sentence take on, say, Timecop is, but I bet it’s just as potential filled as the Inception one.
I think I understand. I think the way I’d use profound is that it’s shorthand for ‘very thought provoking’. So the difference in your sentence is one of degree, but no less real. And I’d agree that both Inception and Snowpiercer are thought provoking at least a little bit.
And so do I ! But my point is that even as action movies they are rather lazy, so that in the end I will always prefer a Mission Impossible movie (or even a Resident Evil although that might be pushing it…).
You might be right with your last paragraph. I’ve never seen Timecop but its one line description is indeed quite appealing
Timecop GOAT. Let’s put that one on the watch party schedule.
Speaking of dumb action movies: Just saw the trailer for Godzilla vs Kong. I usually don‘t like those giant destruction fest movies but if you turn it up to 11 I start to enjoy them, for example having mega robots with swords fight monsters the size of skyscrapers (Pacific Rim).
I liked Driveways (2019) very much - it’s a simple film about new neighbours and friendships between different people, and is much, much better and more affecting than this terrible review might suggest.
Just saw In and Of Itself on Hulu and maybe I’m just in a weird headspace, but it was one of the strangest, most delightful things I’ve seen in years. It’s hard to describe without spoilers, but it’s a filmed version of a one-man theater performance that uses stories and magic (the star is a magician) to interrogate the labels and identities we place on ourselves and others.
Highly recommend when forks who have the time and inclination for some deep soul searching.
Thanks @6ix and others I think for the recommendation of Stake Land, just watched with gf, really great low budget horror film. Budget 625K and made a loss which is really brutally unjust. Really well made movie, had a good time
The Foot Fist Way
Danny McBride’s breakout movie. It’s him being himself as a Tae Kwon Do instructer. If you enjoy him you’ll love this.
Fucking Julio.
If you can’t wait to get back to theatres but don’t really follow the stock market I thought I would point out the GameStop story this past week has also likely saved AMC from going under. A weird side effect of this weird week in the market may have saved movie theatres in the US.
I’m glad AMC was able to raise capital to keep from going under, but theaters problems go beyond weathering the pandemic. If the business model of blockbuster movies releasing in theaters is no longer profitable, then all they did was delay the inevitable. If the demand is there when we can pack theaters full again, then theaters will be there to fill it, regardless if AMC goes bankrupt by the pandemic.
Yeah, I’m not sure why I should be especially worried about a national chain theater going under. I mean, obviously that’s horrible for the people who work there but if AMC dies during the pandemic and gets replaced by another generic corporate cineplex that shows megablockbuster superhero movies, I’m not going to miss them. I’m more worried about my small local indie movie houses.
The Little Things
First 90 minutes:
It was fine. Derivative, more atmosphere than story, but fine.
The last 30 minutes:
What the fuckety fuckin fuck I can not possibly overstate how idiotic one character’s actions are that do not in any way follow from the previous hour and a half. Absolutely infuriating. A god damn clinic on how to write a terrible script that you obviously stopped giving a shit about, but then went ahead and made the movie anyway.
This is literally what our local Chicago movie reviewer said. I’m still gonna watch it because it’s free but I’m bracing myself my for hilarity at the end.
I own the entire Miyazaki videography and have yet to watch this one.
Its known as an all time tear jerker
