Movies (and occasionally face slaps) (Part 1)

Risky, have… have we found a non-obvious movie we both really like?

Just for the record, ‘Minari’ is an American movie written and directed by an American filmmaker set in America with an American lead actor and produced by an American production company

A dark comedy in which four Danish schoolteachers–led by legendary Mads Mikkelsen–commit to the philosophy that you are at your most productive when maintaining a blood alcohol level of .05%.

The rules are simple. You only drink during working hours. No alcohol after 8pm or on weekends. That time is for your family. But for work? :eyes:

No way I’m not watching this. Word is there is a scene from Mads that even people who said the movie was average have gone back to watch multiple times. They say it’s hilarious on a level you can’t expect.

Great movie! Thomas Vinterberg is a fascinating director. The Celebration, The Hunt and especially Submarino are awesome. Requiem for a Dream is a feel good movie compared to Submarino.

I’m familiar with The Hunt, but this Submarino…I must hate myself, but looking for it now :eyes:

Out of sudden interest in the rest of your taste toward movies, I see now you and I need to have a Nolan marathon ITT

Haha! I guess I’ve got battered wife syndrome wrt Nolan but Tenet was the only movie playing in theatres here when it came out but no mo that fo me, unless he asks and seduces me with pretty pictures and lavish scenes… But seriously, I’m all about character building and psychological depth now as I’ve wasted my younger years and sultry looks.

I mostly like European and Korean cinema, my favoUrite being Kim Ki-Duk’s Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter… And Spring, which to me is all about finding inner peace and serenity, way before I realized that’s what all this is all about.

I kind of struggle with Korean cinema. What are some films you delight in from Europe?

Agree every way about the value of rich characters and how much Chris sucks at them. He is a master puzzle maker, and thus I will always give his high-concept films a shot, but it’s his brother Jonathan who I believe has added the touch of humanity in his previous movies. But they’re working on their own separate pieces of the universe now. Jonathan isn’t quite the puzzle maker Chris is, and so we get Westworld from one and Tenet from the other.

Srdan Golubovic - The Trap
Bela Tarr - The Turin Horse
von Donnersmack - The Lives of Others
Roman Polanski - The Pianist
Julian Schnabel - The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

And anything Haneke, Vinterberg, Almodovar, but I absolutely despise Lars von Trier so there’s still some work to do…

Breaking The Waves?
Antichrist?
The Idiots?

I don’t really need richly drawn characters to enjoy a movie. I’m fine with pure spectacle and popcorn, and that’s something Nolan usually delivers for me. I don’t think the key failing of Tenet was the lack of character development (although that was certainly a problem). The biggest issue for me is that it simply failed to be an entertaining time-twist action movie on its own terms. He didn’t do that part any better than the character stuff.

I hear you, I mean Tenet is a nice idea for a 10 minute movie drawn out for 3 hours or something. Primer and Timecrimes excel in time travel / bend category, without character development for that matter.

Have not seen the other two.

Ohhhh. Breaking The Waves is a must.
