De-aging CGI has to be very expensive. And if you don’t get it perfect it will look terrible. And The Irishman is like 6 hours long and 90% of it has actors playing not age-appropriate characters. Just cast people who are the right age. If you want to make a movie with De Niro and Pacino set it in a nursing home.
I mean I’m with you, either pay the cost and do the CGI or just find someone close and do the makeup.
I was completely fine with Joseph Gordon Levitt doing Bruce Willis in Looper
My favorite was when they got Keira Knightley to stand in for Natalie Portman. I couldn’t tell the difference!
Ray Liotta playing 21 when he was 34 remains the biggest stretch for me.
Dolemite - not really good. It’s kind of like a children’s movie with sex and cussing.
Varda by Agnes - autobiographical documentary by the French filmmaker - slow at times but I liked it. Agnes Varda is a cute old lady. Both my daughter and I independently thought that she is a lot like Mister Rogers.
Huh, she still did another cute old lady documentary after Faces Places. Might have to look into it. She was adorable in Faces Places.
Yeah. She’s even older (90+), but doesn’t really look it, though she died not too long after Varda by Agnes.
Because of course. Wildly radical idea: stop fucking giving Clint Eastwood money and call out actors who work with the shitty old talentless dotard rightwing asshole.
This is a bad take, Eastwood has made a bunch of great movies.
And I don’t care what anyone says, The Journal-Constitution and other news outlets ruined Jewell’s life. This is like listening to David Frum’s opinion on the Iraq war. Fuck them.
And if you have to ruin someone else’s life to show how bad Jewell’s life was ruined, well that’s just the cost of freedom isn’t it asshole?
Well she’s already dead so I can’t imagine things getting much worse for her.
I’ll grant that he’s a decent enough director. From what I’ve heard and read, actors like working for him because he’s the anti-Scorcese in that he gets everything within a couple of takes. I thought he did a fine job on Mystic River, American Sniper and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil in particular. But he is and has always been a shit actor. Pick any titles you want from his catalog, he’s the same freaking Bronco Billy/Josey Wales/Dave Garver in every single one. Zombie John Wayne thinks he needs to find some range.
Yeah super convenient to wait til she’s not around to defend herself to level that charge. Afaik no one ever said it while she was alive. (Not sure if the Vanity Fair article it’s based on makes the claim but if it did I was not aware.)
Ironically enough the screenplay was written by Billy Ray, who also wrote and directed Shattered Glass, which was about reporter Stephen Glass who is famous for making up stories and passing them off as true.
She probably wasn’t loved or cared for by anyone who is alive so fuck her!
Shattered glass is an amazing movie. One of my favorites.
It sounds like Eastwood might have taken some artistic license with that aspect of the film. And if the journal constitution or Scruggs’ estate don’t like it they have the same mechanism for redress as Jewell had. Or as David Frum or Colin Powell had if he didn’t like how he was depicted in W (underrated movie btw).
Agree that Eastwood was nothing special as an actor. He’s a great director that makes interesting movies though. And the last thing we need to do is stifle one of the voices in Hollywood that is actually telling original stories rather than churning out superhero dreck.
Oh and how much you want to bet that the relevant people in real life looked more like Paul Walter Hauser and Kathy Bates than Olivia Wilde and Jon Hamm
I think we can pump the brakes a little on the whole “his life was ruined” narrative too. I mean, yeah it absolutely sucks to be wrongly suspected/accused and for that he has my eternal sympathy. But the facts simply do not bear out the bolded. The bombing happened in July 1996. Within three months, he was formally and publicly cleared by the investigating US attorney and even Janet Reno herself, then later by the GA governor. How many other suspects get that? Almost none to none? He went on to sue and settle with several news outlets for some nice scratch (except AJC which didn’t settle and won, with GA courts saying they did nothing illegal) and later wound up with a job in law enforcement. That’s a helluva long way from a life ruined iyam.
And Marie Brenner, who wrote the Vanity Fair piece, was named in the letter the AJC’s lawyers wrote. So it was probably in there too? I didn’t read it though.
The guy playing Jewell looks a LOT like him except the real guy looked more like an overweight Dale Jr.
