Guess I’m glad that I haven’t read that Epstein thread because I haven’t noticed anything.

Do yourself a favor and put that thread on Mute.

How will he know when Epstein shows up alive?

Cue undertaker music

Do I remember right that, during our journey to our current home, many forum people agreed that certain viewpoints/arguments shouldn’t be tolerated in this community? Such as Holocaust denial? I don’t know if that was ever “formally” ratified by any of our several rule-making processes, but even if not, I would suggest that arguments in support of child rapists might fit into that category.

On moderation, my take on a model process in a situation like this might go something like:

  1. A poster is making a ton of bad posts, however defined by our community norms (e.g., defending child rape, unhinged name calling, pointless back-and-forths, etc.).
  2. Regular (meaning non-mod) posters give the first poster some feedback that they might want to change their approach (e.g, take a break, stop name calling, etc.).
  3. If no change is forthcoming, a moderator gives similar feedback. This feedback can implicitly carry the threat of the next step, or it can be explicit in the moderator’s post.
  4. If still no change, a temp-ban is issued. I don’t know what the software allows, but a short cooling off period is what I have in mind (24 hours or possibly even less).

Some folks seem to feel like any banning is a world-shattering event, but it’s not like we’re depriving people of liberty or property. Without recourse to tools like this, how can we ensure the community is a place we willingly participate in?

I would probably agree though that a permaban is something weightier and should entail an additional process of some kind. But I’ll avoid stepping into that for now.

Thoughts?

I wouldn’t characterize churchill as being in support of child rapists. I think he believes Epstein was a bad dude and has this weird notion that Maxwell was controlled by Epstein, denying her agency. He also seems to misunderstand sex trafficking as sex slavery where women are literally in bondage. And he wasted time with nittery about defining “kid”, which I speculate reminds people of those who try too hard to distinguish between pedophiles and ephebophiles.

I kinda think we should have some sort of chess draw type rule, where if two posters make 2-3 posts each at each other in a row they receive a time out. That’s one of the more frustrating things for me.

I am considering your points. Thank you for the thoughtful post.

The software gives you a warning that you have been replying to the same person a lot. It has made me pause occasionally and not write a reply right away. And there are definitely time when there are valid exchanges. Usually, these involve questions being asked and answered. Exchanges are more likely to be problematic when no one is asking questions or when questions go unanswered.

A pile on is a far more serious punishment than a temp-ban. Who cares about a temp-ban?

Good name in man and woman, dear my lord,
Is the immediate jewel of their souls:
Who steals my purse steals trash; 'tis something, nothing;
'Twas mine, 'tis his, and has been slave to thousands:
But he that filches from me my good name
Robs me of that which not enriches him
And makes me poor indeed.

Post lives up to name imo

I think pile ons are good.

When I made a dumb comment back on 22 everyone immediately pounced and yeah it made me angry and annoyed but it did drive home the point that maybe I might be wrong if everyone is on the opposite side of me.

Aw man, I love when I get that warning. It lets me know me and someone are having a good chat and might be on the road to friendship

But obv you and I have a fair amount of different conversations on UP :P

especially weird when you look at who Maxwell’s father was, how he died, his relationship with Donald Barr-- father of America’s current AG, man who hired Epstein to teach at math the Dalton School despite Epstein being a college dropout-- etc. etc.

It’s possible that churchill was unaware of all this. The replies in that thread were not particularly well-suited to arguing with a person of good will who was ignorant.

I disagree 100%. If you can’t get your point across in two posts, then you suck at posting. If someone hasn’t changed their mind after those two posts, then they’re not going to. If you’re asking questions and they’re answering, then you’re just JAQing off and you need to cut that shit out.

We’re not dumb here, and we need to stop acting like it.

Yes, that and a truckload of xenophobia and sexism.

Some people ask question in good faith because they legitimately don’t know the answer and want to learn.

Because no one wants those type of conversations with you.

Repeated back and forths happen naturally sometimes between two people enjoying the chat, even if it’s annoying for people like you to see.

Turmoil the last couple days? It’s probably because I mostly wasn’t around.
