Melania and Misogyny

The fact that “This place has a blind spot for misogyny” was the previous thread title didnt give anything away?

I’m well aware this is a minority position.

It’s more than a blind spot. Thread dies ending on a completely different subject and it gets bumped a day later with ‘stop telling me I can’t insult women!’.

The catharsis comes from being offensive and crossing lines. It comes from the same place as celebrating the potential suffering and even death of Donald Trump due to COVID.

We feel pain and we enjoy the idea of using words that might cause others even greater pain if they were to hear us utter them.

This is something that you should discuss with a therapist, IMO. Thats not healthy at all.

It’s how most people’s minds work. I am just more self-aware than most.

Fair enough and insight goes a long way. I would hope that the kind of discussion in this thread will actually steer people away from this kind of behavior.

Yeah honestly the “Lady G” stuff has been bothering me. You’re all adults so you can say whatever you want, but it’s just homophobic. Even if you buy into the idea that it’s ok to attack his hypocrisy about possible homosexuality**, calling him Lady G is just making fun of him for being gay. Not because he’s a hypocrite.

** it’s also kind of gross to just gossip about someone’s sexuality. Remember when everyone got so mad at Joy Reid about her homophobic blog posts? They were literally exactly this, except she was talking about Charlie Crist

In light of those tapes - she sure does sound like a 100% calculating asshole who very likely never had a bit of real affection for Donnie Dum Dum. But as the progenitor of this wonderful thread - I agree nothing about Melania being a horrible person makes misogynistic attacks on her more acceptable than they would have been otherwise.

I just never felt like golddigger was that misogynistic, and definitely not up there with say something like attacking SHS’s weight - which directly attacks a class of innocent people. But I can see now that the gold-digger insult is primarily aimed at women, which causes an asymmetric imbalance and is a kind micro-aggression against all women.

Do you disagree that this is racist?

Couple of posts in the POZZED thread are a little dubious, gotta say.

I have a real problem with letting the worst people in the world hide behind shields that were forged in blood… blood that very often is on their hands.

Lindsay Graham has been a high ranking official in a group that has rules about what is an acceptable level of homophobia. If you’re part of that group, especially a high ranking member of that group, I think you’re exempt from any protections you might get from rules that you aggressively opposed and helped kill for decades.

I get what you guys are saying on a little picture micro level, and I think you’re basically right there… but at the same time from a big picture perspective there’s no better language for portraying their hypocrisy than their own language. I think having your own hatred returned to you with interest is a pretty fitting punishment for fomenting hatred.

Plus 1 to this.

One of the best things about this place is how frequently people change their position based on the discussion. It’s pretty damn unique

The issue isn’t the harm to Melania or Graham. Fuck them. There’s been a dozen “I hope they die from Covid” posts recently that I’ve happily hearted.

The harm is the continuation of harmful stereotypes.

And my point is that big picture those stereotypes aren’t going away because we spared the people who push them from becoming relatable object lessons in how shitty it is to have those slurs heaped on you. I know it’s counter intuitive, but I think it helps more than it hurts.
