This really does look like it’s going to be an amazing comic book movie and maybe even a little more in the same way as The Dark Knight was, but it does feel kinda awful for stuff like Batgirl to get shelved despite a) amazing representation of diversity in the cast and characters, eg Batgirl’s transgender best friend Alysia and Batgirl herself being played by Leslie Grace, and b) Batgirl also featured Michael Keaton as Batman training Batgirl WTF!!!
Even if the movie was as bad as the studio says (but the star flatly denies), the novelty and cult acclaim alone would make it a prestige product.
You know how they say one for them, one for us? They should have released Batgirl for us. Then sure, I’ll buy a ticket for whatever piece of war drivel Nolan makes next. Clap clap WB.
Michael Keaton doing a Yoda voice: There is hope
Filipino actress Ivory Aquina was playing the live-action adaptation of Batgirl’s/Barbara Gordon’s best friend Alysia Yeoh, who married her girlfriend Jo in Batgirl #45
The character of Alysia Yeoh first appeared in the Batman Vol. 4 comic in 2011, and at the time was noted for being the first transgender character in a mainstream comic book.
In an interview with Wired at the time, DC Comics writer Gail Simone said she had made the decision to introduce Alysia as she felt the comics ought to reflect the diversity of their audience.
“Why in the world can we not do a better job of representation of not just humanity, but also our own loyal audience?” she said.
Just kidding lol I think we’ve got a good chance of seeing Batgirl someday as a lost project, but I have no hope of ever seeing Ivory play Alysia
Well, at least there’s Gotham Nights with Tyler DiChiara as Cullen Row… No way, that’s been canceled too!!!
Well at least here’s Batman beating up some homophobes, transphobes, and biphobes.
