I think âmixedâ was to be expected. I havenât really been expecting top-tier MCU. Iâm fine if itâs a 6/10 and am hoping for a 7/10.
The first one didnât do much better, but for me it was an absolute banger. Maybe a stronger matter of taste than I like, but hey since it appears to be to my tasteâŚ
My boi Dave Chen has been very critical of the MCU, so I am ready to run the races on his word that The Marvels is good.
He says the movie stands on its own, but youâll get the most out of it if you watch:
Captain Marvel
Ms Marvel
WandaVision (including post credits)
He says DO NOT watch Secret Invasion lollllll
Havenât the various strikes also impacted Disneyâs ability to promote the movie the way it deserves?
In that particular area where the actors would be promoting the movie, but that wouldnât negate the criticism.
The Marvels has its charms, but it was more miss than hit for me overall. I do like the characters and welcome them as pieces of future Avengers projects, but I struggled to care too much about the story.
Iâm seeing it tomorrow morning at a sensory friendly screening. Lights are up/sound is down just a bit. Should help me and my neurodivergent significant other have an optimal viewing experience.
Iâll report back if we remain as far apart from you on The Marvels as we were for the OG.
I suspect we may be. They were continuing off of a story that you cared about and I didnât, which is where the âliked the protagonists, still donât care about the Kree/Skrull stuffâ split decision comes from on my end. I do feel like I actually liked this one a bit better than Captain Marvel. Hope you enjoy.

Did you by any chance see Foxâs take on the Skrulls in X-Men: Dark Phoenix?
Iâm a little sad that they did so many reshoots on that one after Captain Marvel came out and they realized they had made essentially the same movie. Iâd have far preferred Phoenix as Captain Marvel than what we got.
Nah, I havenât seen any X-Men beyond the original. I went into this weird period of hibernation where I just straight-up ignored superhero movies for a very long time. I literally did not know the MCU was a thing that existed until after Endgame had already happened, which is wild for me to even get my mind around now. I played catch-up starting a couple of years ago and Iâve seen all the MCU movies now.
Ah well most are not going to be to your taste imo.
But of those you should give a shot, X2 and Days of Future Past are great in the way Dark Knight was great. The superhero part is just a bonus if you like that kind of thing, but they are very good movies on their own.
Iâd also suggest First Class if you want to see a different kind of swing at the franchise.
Logan though? Legit awesome. Very, very different ofc, which was a huge plus.
I think Logan was great even tho strangely not to my taste. Unfortunately the idea of Wolverine with a diminished healing ability facing insurmountable odds was already used in the prior The Wolverine, so it always felt to me like an unfortunate retread.
Writer Eric Martin talks at length about writing, his process, working in the confines of the MCU, and how he prepared himself for a job so big.
My review of The Marvels
I didnât get to see it. I went to AMCâs early sensory sensitive screening â but the screening never started.
At the entrance, the usher reminded us, âThis is a sensory sensitive screening.â
I said, âThatâs why we picked it.â
When the minutes collected after the start time and nothing started, my significant other asked an employee if they could check.
We waited five minutes, so she went back to ask a second time. After a moment of us waiting again, an employee came into the auditorium to tell us no one had ingested this copy of the movie into their database, but theyâd be happy to switch us to a 3D screening that was about to start.
So yeah, no movie as thatâs the exact opposite of a sensory sensitive screening. Maybe try again tomorrow for a normal screening at a different theater.
Thatâs annoying. Hopefully you can get a screening that works soon.
