First order of business, locate and mark the sweet spot. Bat on the right is a 34-inch, 33 ounce log with a sweet spot about as wide as a toothpick. Hit the ball anywhere else and your hands get rung up really bad. It was my stepdad’s bat and I hit rocks with it because fuck him that’s why.

Gilbert going tomorrow. Toronto hit him pretty hard in his last start, but he still looked decent. Wouldn’t mind it if they added an arm or two before the deadline. Maybe a catcher. Raleigh looks good defensively, but sub .200 at the plate hurts.

It’s crazy how horrendous Josh Hader’s slump is right now. Was the most dominant reliever in the league and for the last two weeks has been the worst and I’m guessing it isn’t close.

His wife recently had a baby and there were some complications (sounded significant - he took time off before the baby was born), so it might be a mental thing right now. Someone on a Brewers board said he thinks he’s tipping his pitches - there’s a difference in his delivery depending on the pitch.
Last night, he entered the game with a 5-2 lead and gave up three homers, including a walk-off grand slam.
Totally standard that Geno is the guy the Reds brass were dying to offload for salary and was supposed to be the bag of dicks in the Winker trade. He’s posted about $20M worth of baseball at the ASB on $11M salary, pretty much on point with his numbers in the 3-year window before Covid season. Lol Reds.

My comp for Mariners catchers is Dan Wilson and a quick comparison of the meat of Wilson’s career vs. Raleigh this year makes Cal look ok except for avg and obp. So I guess he’s got the rest of this season and the next 8 to surpass Wilson. Wilson’s post-season numbers are complete shit, so I think Cal might have a decent shot here if the M’s can manage to end the drought.

WTF is going on w/ Tatis has been about the tightest secret in town. So secret that my spidey-sense is telling me that there hasn’t actually been a plan to speak of. Anyways we finally got some actual news.today… he’s been cleared to start working out. My WAG is that they’ll activate him late August.
As for moving from SS to CF, that would be a terrible shame. I’m surprised the Padres don’t seem to look at it that way or care. Everyone has their own constants, but if we take Baseball Reference we have…

Over 14 years, and assuming everything else is replacement value or equivalent, that’s about a 6.3 WAR difference. Which is huge. And unless they had already priced in his immediate move downward on the defensive spectrum, not what they were paying the big $$$ to get.
