I love Ohtani but he was dead to rights there if not for one of the worst throws I’ve seen from a big leaguer.

Blake snell with a no hitter thru 7 but he’s at 107 pitched

Kids: We want a no-hitter!

Mom: Sorry kids, we have a no-hitter at home.

No hitter at home: [Combined no hitter against the Snakes.]

Yes, but “surprise attack” steals provoke bad throws. It’s not like that was a weak chopper to second and he air mailed it to first.

Can someone find the discrepancy between fWAR (3.2) and bWAR (6.5) on Wade Miley? BREF has him as twice the player in WAR and 2nd in MLB behind Ohtani.

Sorry. I’m still figuring out the whole 7 inning double header thing. I’m assuming today’s Reds games are 7 innings.

fWAR uses fielding independent pitching projection based on true outcomes stuff (HR, SO, BB, HBP). bWAR uses runs allowed. So it seems like he has been lucky on balls in play, suppressing his ERA and inflating his bWAR.

Mondesi off the IL with a homer and a steal in his 1st 2 ABs. If this kid could stay healthy.

I’m looking at the fWAR “calculation” and not even a single mention of any regression-related concept let alone the very advanced ideas that would be needed to do this properly. This honestly looks like exactly what it is: amateur hacks making it up as they go. It’s a bunch of fudge factors and other random shit tossed in that’s completely arbitrary.

That’s the big problem I have with WAR. There are no real model specifications, diagnostics, or really anything here. So a decade or two from now when someone figures this out, it’s going to erase this nonsense and we’ll have to talk about those two to three decades where a bunch of people making baseball decisions got “fooled by WAR” or whatever. Harold Reynolds will probably still be on MLB Network talking shit about it.

Bahaha fucking Rube Waddell, a legend. This is a must-listen for baseball fans (it’s also a podcast, so you don’t have to use YouTube)
